Mit brennender Sorge apparently upset the Nazis.

What (briefly) was The Pope's message?

Bryan --

The Vatican
"Pius XI, Mit Brennender Sorge," (March 13, 1937)
http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xi/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xi_enc_14031937_mit-brennender-sorge_en.html

But the objections of the National Socialist government might start with this:
"None but superficial minds could stumble into concepts of a national
God, of a national religion; or attempt to lock within the frontiers
of a single people, within the narrow limits of a single race. . ."

A Google search strategy of "Mit Brennender Sorge" did it. I'm not
quite sure why you would have had problems with it?

Foolishly, I went to the New York Times archive first, to see what the
reports of the times were. But having no luck, I went back to a
Google search. Now I'm intrigued and will go back to newspaper
reports of the time.

I'm surprised that I'd never seen reference to this encyclical,
particularly because I've read all of William Shirer's reporting of
the epoch in Germany.

And there's the joy that this answer has taken me to new heights: I've
never had The Vatican as a citation before!!

Best regards,

"Mit Brennender Sorge" received scant attention, at least in the U.S.
The New York Times makes NO mention of it.

However, on Easter Sunday that year, his condemnation of Communism was
big news. The Associated Press account of the encyclical was printed
in its entirety (translated from Latin, of course) and the Times
carried a story under the headline:
POPE BIDS NATIONS END RED 'RAVAGES'; URGES FAIR WAGES
In Anti-Communist Encyclical He Calls for Battle Against 'the Anti-God Campaign'
CITES CONDITIONS IN SPAIN
Asks Employers to Recognize Worker's 'Inalienable Right' to Sufficient Return

These press reports from Vatican City were dated March 18.

Great, Omni ...

And very many thanks for the further reading.

You certainly made it look VERY easy but Gottverdammich - without
checking -I had convinced myself that one of our esteemed German
colleagues would have been needed to suss this one out.

So often when I search for German words and phrases I get tons of
references in German. Surely, it's not asking too much for complete
standardisation throughout the word? Gottverdammich this is 2004.

My thanks also to the Great Answerfinder ... I shall certainly check out The Times.

I find it very painful to scrutinise The Times of yesteryear because
of the prices then and the price today. And THEN The Times was
choc-a-bloc with interesting stuff but now?

All the Best to you Both

Bryan
