Dear nickdef1-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.

The term ?pentobarbiturates? (as you have written it), is not actually
a formal classification of drugs at all (there?s no such thing). There
are some informal references to ?Phenobarbiturates? but this is
actually a misnomer. The drug Phenobarbital however, is officially
classified as a barbiturate and I assume this is what you are
referring to.

The symptoms of barbiturate withdrawal (Phenobarbital in particular)
can be severe and have been known to cause death, usually by
cardiovascular collapse or cerebral hemorrhage. Minor withdrawal
symptoms may appear 8 to 12 hours after the last dose of
Phenobarbital. It usually begins with a ?hangover? type
feeling?.before the REAL ugliness starts.

Initial withdrawal symptoms usually appear in the following order:
anxiety, muscle twitching/cramps, headaches (sometimes called
?withdrawal headaches? or ?rebound headaches?), chills, tremor of
hands and fingers, progressive weakness, dizziness, distortion in
visual perception, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and orthostatic
hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure that occurs when a person
stands up). Basically, since barbiturate addiction is one of the
hardest addictions to break, if you can conjure up all the most
distasteful and horrific symptoms imaginable and make a list of them,
that?s very similar to what a heavily addicted user might experience
if he were to attempt sudden and unassisted cessation.

Major withdrawal symptoms such as convulsions and delirium may occur
within 16 hours and last up to 5 days after abrupt cessation of this
drug. Intensity of withdrawal symptoms gradually declines over a
period of approximately 15 days but most experts agree that even the
worst heroin withdrawal is not so intense as bad barbiturate
withdrawal.

As a lifelong member of law enforcement myself, I can attest to the
fact that unassisted withdrawal is a terrible thing to witness and it
must certainly be an even more terrible thing to experience.

?Because the risk for seizures and other severe complications is high,
barbiturate withdrawal should be monitored in a hospital setting.
Patients are given low doses of Phenobarbital at a regular interval
until mild intoxication is achieved. The dosage amount and frequency
is then gradually decreased until withdrawal is complete.?
