Question ID: 424937
Where can I purchase Strongbow Cider (It's made by Bulmer's in the UK)
in America? I would prefer to pick it up locally in or around Boston,
but I can purchase online as well. (I'm looking at buying a case or
two at a time, but if necessary I can buy more.)

I have found two online sources for Strongbow Cider, and one place
where you may be able to purchase it in a store. However, the store is
not in Boston, but in Medford.

If this information would be fully satisfactory, I'll be glad to post
it as an answer. If not, I'll leave your question open, and perhaps
another Researcher will be able to find a store in Boston for you.

I bet the place to purchase it in a store is Kappy's, but Medford is
fine. It's about 15 minutes away from me. Online is great too. Thanks!

You must be psychic. The store that sells Strongbow Cider is indeed
Kappy's, in Medford.

"After Prohibition, cider making became virtually a lost art. But the
microbrew rage opened up a market for quality, hand-crafted alcoholic
alternatives, and the popularity of Irish pubs in the late 1980s in
Boston, New York and Chicago ushered in a thirst for cider, most of it
from England where consumption far exceeds that of the United States.
England's H.P. Bulmer Company, the largest cider maker in the world,
is America's biggest importer with Strongbow and Woodpecker brands...

Hard cider is best purchased at better beer retailers, though wine
shops carry an occasional bottle or two. Bottle prices range from
$1.49 for a 12-ounce Hornsby's to $8 for the 25-ounce Hudson Valley
Farmhouse Cider. Here are a few top hard cider retailers across the
country...

Kappy's, Medford, MA (617) 395-8888. Eight hard ciders from Strongbow
to Woodchuck."

"Strongbow was a little dry and more tart than Woodchuck, which was
perfect for my tastes. I don?t like my cider overly dry, and up until
now I hadn?t had one with satisfactory tartness.

The only place I?ve heard mention of the stuff being sold is in
Medford (Kappy?s liquors?)"

I'm not posting an answer to your question because I read the fine
print on the websites of the merchants offering Strongbow Cider, and I
found this message:

"No alcohol shipment to Utah, Michigan, Maryland, Massachusetts,
Tennessee, and Kentucky."

Drat. It appears that Kappy's is your best bet, unless you can arrange
for Boston to secede from Massachusetts. ;-)

Kappy's is HUGE. It is a massively huge liquor store, and I feel dumb
for not thinking of it. Seriously, Kappy's is a really really big
place and they sell everything. As soon as I read Medford I knew what
you meant.

I'll be happy to pay if you like... Or just come up this way and I'll
buy you a Strongbow.

Aha, I called Kappy's and they do not sell it at the Medford location
("That stuff is great, but believe it or not it doesn't sell." -the
beer manager at Kappy's), but they do sell it at the Malden Location
on Route 1. 781-321-1000 Cans and bottles. Wooooooooo!

I'm glad you found a Kappy's that carries your cider!

You may want to cancel your question now. Since I didn't turn up
anything very useful, just consider my comments to be a freebie. At
least I'm coming away from this with a notion of a cider that I'd like
to try. ;-)

Best regards,
pinkfreud
