I need insightful sources that analyze the cause for the fall of the Gran Colombia. Many of the sources I have gathered, are very general and don't provide enough information on crucial factors, like economy, social structures and difference in government ideals that caused the separation of the Union. Information I have been looking for online includes things like: What were Bolivar's original plans and ideas of La Gran Colombia, how it came to be. Why Venezuela and Ecuador decided to separate from the union, who led the separation in both nations, what was their driving force, their supporters, their ideals. What was the response from Bogotá, the response of Bolivar? And it would be great if there was any information on the long-lasting effects this separation had for all the nations involved. (For example the Bolivarian Dream followed by the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia and Chavez in Venezuela) but that is not as necessary. I do not need information of the separation of panama. These are sites I have found so far; http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?frd/cstdy:@field(DOCID+co0022) http://ateneovirtual.alasbarricadas.org/historia/index.php?page=de+la+Gran+Colombia http://reference.allrefer.com/country-guide-study/colombia/colombia22.html http://www.mipunto.com/venezuelavirtual/000/000/002/001.jsp http://historicaltextarchive.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=354 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gran_Colombia |

An excellent starting point for your research is ' The World Guide'. A fairly bland title for what it is. It has a section on every country in the world presented not from the usual Western World point of view but from the Third World point of view. It gives a history of each country from its inception to present times. For Northern part of South America, say, it would start with the Spanish conquest, go through its development stages (many mentions of Simon Bolivar) through to the selling of the country to the World Bank and the IMF and present day politics and conflicts. I was expecting a little more on Collombia but by piecing together sections on Venezuela, Ecuador etc. a complete pictre can be built up. It also has bar and pie charts on present day public expenditure; workers and land use together with profiles of society; envitonment and the state. To quote what it says about its own history section:- "Efforts were made to avoid the most frequent biases of Western reference books, such as to appearing to make history start with the arrival of the Europeans (particularly with reference to African or Latin American countries)or ignoring the role of women". TWG is published every two years in Uruguay and is distributed in USA; Canada; ANZ and seven European countries It is available from Amazon and the local distributers (probably via your local bookstore). I have the 1997/1998 version and there is also a 2003/204 version. Details as follows: VERSION ISBN 1997/1998 1-869847-43-1 (paperback) " 1-869847-42-3 (hardback) 2003/2004 0-954049-97-7 (paperback I think) USA Distributor: Humanities Press International Inc. 165 First Avenue, Atlantic Highlands, NJ 07716 Tel: 908 8721441 Fax: 908 8720717 Hope this helps, If you want a different distributor let me know - Regards |

I realized that it is non-sequitur to say history in the book starts with the indigenous people and then say it starts with the arrival of the Spanish. I meant to say ' For your research it would start with the Spanish Conquest'. Anyway I had a further idea. Why not get in touch with the cultural department of the embassies of the present day countries which made up the former La Gran Colombia and ask them to send you what they have got on the subject. It's what they love to do. |

Get Colombia: Fragmented Land, Divided SOciety by Frank Safford and Marco Palacios (2002, Oxford University Press). Chapter 7 is devoted entirely to "Bolivar's Colombia, 1819-1831". The chapters are chronological as well so Chapter 6 deals with independence (1808-1825), and chapter 8 with the formation of New Granada (1831-1845). It's in chapter 7 that you will find the most information about the collapse of Gran Colombia. I'm finishing up my MA in anthro right now, focusing on Colombia (i'll spare you the details) and i have to say that this book has been crucial in my research, especially with all the history i need to include as a backgrounder to my actual topic. It's worth the purchase (or the borrowing from the library i suppose). |

I thank you all for your useful contribution, the books and websites suggested have been a great help in my project, your help has been better than google's researchers. I've cancelled the question. |
