I'm wanting to produce a map of the U.S. and Canada, with some cities
indicated with dots in various colours. Additionally, I'd like to be
able to shade in some regions (which don't directly map to either
states or provinces) in various colours.

I can't find a very easy way to do this online; the best I found was a
program called MapServer at the University of Minnesota, which is more
complicated than what I need.

I'd like suggestions for a free, reasonably simple way to do this.

I assume it does need to be done online rather than a downloaded
program... do you need to save the result, or just print it out?
I have found some that allow you to enter co-ordinates (so is a bit
technical) presumably you just want to 'draw' onto the map.

Good questions.

I don't mind downloading a program to generate the map; that'd be
fine. Or online is fine. I do need to save the result, so I can
present it as some form of image file.

I would be fine with some sort of program where I have to enter
co-ordinates as latitude/longitude pairs and have to enter the
boundary co-ordinates for the shaded regions in the same way. I'm not
interested in having to enter co-ordinates in x/y form, as then I'd
need to find the mapping from longitude/latitude to x/y.

I'm not at all uncomfortable with "technical," but merely want to
avoid "tedious." I'd really prefer this actually took me 1 hr or so,
rather than the 6 it would take me to do otherwise.

Thanks!

Hi,

Doing a search at www.yahoo.com for outline maps north america yeilded
some very good hits.

The first one in particular from Education Place produces the maps in
adobe so you can edit on your desktop or from print.

I hope this helps in your search.

If your local library has access to Facts on File in print, or
EBSCOhost online these two sources will also provide excellent outline
maps for your.

You can download a map outline program that allows you to "...Adjust
the size of the map and add symbols, labels, and numbers..." at:
          http://www.schoolhousetech.com/mapwf.html

This shareware program allows you to sample the program "....Download
Map Worksheet Factory 2 for a free evaluation and then purchase the
program for only $25 US."

Guestmap does not allow you to shade areas but is an interesting
online map which allows you to "post" people at different locations.
I've had to "shorlify" the URL to fit it on the comment page:
            http://shorl.com/deruhotyhesty

Another intersting map page that offers the capabilities you require
is:
            http://shorl.com/gystagotranifa

I hope one of these resources is satisfactory for your needs.
