Sorry, this is a real girly question.

My husband thinks I should trade in my car. It's a black Saab
convertible turbo, 1992. And what's a Carlsson? How do you tell?
PRICE? Please.

And I'm supposed to buy a Mercedes, automatic, bloody big, blue thingy
with double glasing! and it was £78k new in @1995

It all sounds like mad boys and toys, so some advice from you
brilliant sorts, please,

Thank You

Apologies! I framed the question badly.

Saab, black, convertible, Turbo, 1992, manual. VS Mercedes, blue, 500
SEC coupe automatic, 1995.

I was expecting a long list of pros and cons, running costs,
devaluations etc what I got was personal preferences!

I can make my own mind-up on the colour,(but thanks pinkfreud-ga, and
pixeldev-ga for your sympathy) I've had a blast driving it for 8
years, but the turbo unit hasn't packed-up yet, so I'm on borrowed
time at 136,000! And the new roof leaks so it smells like a wet dog.
Not nice. So a good time to trade-up (thank you frde-ga)

I'm not so interested in the opinions of the Skoda salesmen, but I
think steph53-ga, pronopublico-ga (also one of the Skoda salesmen) and
guzzi-ga were a bit harsh in suggesting that I dump my husband in
favour of a car.

They generally have more milage,

This is just a personal viewpoint, but if it were up to me, I'd keep
the Saab, if it's in good condition.

I agree with Guzzi - my cryptic comment was a bit too cryptic.

Saabs can get a bit expensive to maintain, my younger brother has been
through a few of them, but he is a complete menace when it comes to
cars.

Personally I would keep the Saab until it becomes a financial
liability, which could be a long time with a responsible driver. They
are well built.
You could 'plate' it - ie: get a cheap personal numberplate, as a
concession to your husband's vanity.

A Merc is a ridiculous idea, you might like one of the smaller
sportyish models, but the idea of driving around in a cross between a
tank and a pimpmobile is ... pretty ludicrous.

What Probono did not mention is that Skoda are owned by Volkswagen,
and that the Czechs have long had a superb reputation for engineering.
If you find the turbo on the Saab is playing up, the cylinder head
cracked and the gearbox making strange noises, then you could do a lot
worse than buying a Skoda.
