Question ID: 42617
I am looking for a merchant, online or local to the greater
Sacramento, CA area, who has the Canon EOS D60 digital camera kit in
stock or can guarantee delivery by 8/16/02. I would prefer not to pay
more than a 10% premium, if possible. If more than one merchant is
found, who has the lowest price?

Hi supergreen,
You mentioned a 10% premium. What is your expected base price upon
which premiums may or may not be added?
Thanks

It seems as though the commonly listed price (for those who are out of
stock) is $2,199.99. Although I couldn't find an MSRP on Canon's
website, it seems as though that is it given the frequency with which
I find that price. Therefore, after rounding up, I would hope not to
pay anymore than $2,500.

Thanks!

Hi super_green-ga

Would you consider bidding on one at e-bay ?
I did a little search for you and found this
http://half.ebay.com/account/include/frame/ebayFrame.jsp?target=ebay_query&search_string=%28%22Canon+eos+d60%22%29
They seem to have several of them available right now and brand new.
Unluckily to buy them now you will have to offer more then what you
intended but you can probably get a good price bidding.
Also for most of them the auction will end on time for the seller to
ship the item before 8/16/02

I may well go the eBay route, silviares-ga, but was hoping for
something more stable/reliable than that. I should have clarified
from the start that I had considered eBay, but it was also suggested
as a comment, and therefore won't accept that as an answer. Sorry.
Besides, if you actually search on auctions that have ended, you'll
see that all the ones that have closed have gone over my stated price
range...

It would, if it didn't say "PRE-ORDER". :-) Actually, though, I may
have found a lead on a merchant through eBay (after all). I want to
keep the question open in case that doesn't pan out. I should know in
a week or so, and will close the question at that time. Researchers
considering this question may want to wait until I update the question
again before spending any time on it... Thanks for trying!

Well, now I see the difficulty! I've just spent the last 30 minutes
on the phone and online and the response is unanimous - best summed up
by this website:

" Canon EOS-D60 Availability Information

Canon has continued to release EOS-D60s in fairly small shipments. Due
to continued heavy demand for this model we are still working on
filling pre-orders and backorders and will continue to do so until all
are filled. We are hopeful that D60 shipments from Canon will start to
increase in size as we go through the month of July. All Orders will
be filled on a first-in, first-out basis as shipments arrive."

For the benefit of future researches who may take on this challenge,
I've phoned all 4 of the Ritz/Kits Camera stores in Sacramento, and
have phoned the following online stores. All have given me estimates
ranging from 4 weeks to 2 months of backorder:

The only one I can't confirm (closed tonight) is this one:

Good luck in your search --K~

$2199 is the base I see.
Penn Camera is taking first come first served full prepayment orders
but doesn't have date guarantees.
