The details below are taken from the US Government?s Earthquake
Hazards Program. The figures are generally corroborated on many other
sites. The cities you mentioned were not at the epi-centre of the
earthquakes.

December 16, 1920, 
China, Gansu, 35.8 N 105.7 E, 
Deaths 200,000 
Magnitude 8.6 
Comments: Major fractures, landslides

July 27, 1976 
China, Tangshan 
39.6 N 118.0 E
Deaths 255,000 
(official) Magnitude 7.5 
Comments: Estimated death toll as high as 655,000.
