I have a word doc. that i deleted more text than i wanted too. I

Hello Adam,

An awful lot depends on exactly what happened -- how and when the text
was deleted, and what has happened since.

Can you tell us a bit more about:

--when was the text deleted
--how was it deleted (e.g. by accident? deliberately?
--have you exited from Word since the deletion?
--has the computer been shit down and restarted since the deletion?

Also, is your version of Word set up for AutoRecover? If you're not
sure, click on the "Tools" menu, and select "options" from the
pull-down menu. From the Options box, select the tab for "Save" and
let me know if the box is checked next to the "Save AutoRecover info
every X minutes".

Let me know what you come up with. Thanks.

--when was the text deleted.

text was deleted on purpose, then saved. then i emailed the file to
myself at home.

--how was it deleted (e.g. by accident? deliberately?

deliberate

--have you exited from Word since the deletion?

yes, and emailed the doc to myself.

--has the computer been shit down and restarted since the deletion?

yes

I know there is a way to find data on a word doc that has been deleted
or backspaced. word is WYSIWYG, so when you backspace. it doesnt
delete it from the code.

Also, is your version of Word set up for AutoRecover? If you're not

let me know if the box is checked next to the "Save AutoRecover info

Yes it is checked, but i dont think it will help because i didnt edit
the doc on this PC. i emailed it to this PC

Let me know what you come up with. Thanks.

Hmmm....this is getting to sound more complicated than I first thought.

Only thing I can suggest is looking at the file with a hex
viewer...this sometimes uncovers text that wouldn't otherwise be
readily visible.

Try downloading Hex Editor II, a shareware (free to try) viewer/editor:

http://www.popularshareware.com/Hex-Editor-II-download-6871.html

and use it to view your file. After downloading, unzipping and
opening the program, use it to open the file in question. Make sure
you scroll down the full length of the file, because there is often a
l-o-o-o-o-n-g set of gibberish after your text, but it can then be
followed up by some additional retrievable text.

Let me know if that works out at all.

P.S. And I meant to say "shut down" earlier...really....shut down!

i tried Hex Editor II, no luck. I can open the doc in there but it is gibberish

It shouldn't be total gibberish -- you should be able to view the
document in a combination of different views...binary, hexadecimal,
and plain text.

After the document is opened, you can select the pull-down menu under
the "View" options, and select "text" to see a text-only version of
the document.

There will still be some gibberish, no doubt, but there should be some
readable text as well (assuming the original document was primarily
text-based, rather than a graphics-type of document).

Let me know how it works out.
