I am looking for biographical information on a James Hewitt- "well
known" architect in the New York area in the 1920-30's. Interested in
information available regarding
any of his commissions in CT, in particular any buildings designed in
Wilton,CT for the Spencer/Rice family.

Hi there. Since you've posted two questions on Hewitt -- and would
like two researchers working on it simultaneously -- I've been looking
into this question for you.

I agree with my colleague that there isn't any readily available
information on an architect by the name of James Hewitt. Perhaps you
can tell us a bit more about how you came across the name, and what
your source(s) of information was.

James M. Hewlett is certainly a possibility, and he did do some design
work in Connecticut -- I know of a Danbury hospital that is his work.
Hewlett was quite a well-known architect in his day.

Another possibility is a less well-known architect by the name of
Edward Hewitt, who lived in Connecticut, although from what I can
tell, a good deal of his work was in NY.

Both were active in the 1920's and '30's.

Let me know what you think.

sounds like it is definitely james hewitt we are talking about. I am interested
because I would like to know of other homes or structures designed by
him- was he famous like David Adler and if so, what are some of his
works? I am
ultimately trying to find out the connection between him and the
(first name? ) Spencer ( the eighth Head of the NY Bar Association)
and why he was chosen to design the rebuilding of
the Spencer Rice home on Sharp Hill Rd. in Wilton, CT after it burned down in
1930.
