I'm stationed at Ft. Bragg and was looking at a map when I noticed "Dragon NDB" on the map. My question is what does the NDB stand for? |

NDB stands for "Navigation Database" (or "Navigational Database"), as mentioned in this glossary of communication and navigational terms: "NDB ~ Navigational Database" Homeywell CommNav Glossary http://www.honeywellcommnav.com/general/glossary.htm "The NDB, which is quite familiar to operators, is a database of navigation and route information used by the FMC [flight management computer] to carry out navigation tasks." 911-strike: Remote control: built-in or bolt-on? http://www.911-strike.com/remote_bb.htm My search strategy in locating this information began with a visit to the Acronym Finder website, which lists a number of possibilities; "Navigational Data Base" is the only one of these that makes sense in the context of a map: Acronym Finder http://www.acronymfinder.com/af-query.asp?String=exact&Acronym=NDB Google Web Search: ndb "navigation OR navigational database" ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ndb+%22navigation+OR+navigational+database%22 I hope this is helpful. If anything is unclear or incomplete, please request clarification; I'll be glad to offer further assistance before you rate my answer. Best regards, pinkfreud |

I don't know, but Non Directional Beacon seems to me more likely to appear on a map. |

Non Directional Beacon is certainly a possibility, if the NDB refers to an actual location on the map. It appears in the Acronym Finder list. If the NDB appears in a margin, or at the top or bottom of the map (outside the graphic area), Navigational Database seems more likely. Acronym-guessing is not an exact science. ;-) |

Yet another option: a friend has informed me that, in a military context, NDB is sometimes used as an abbreviation of "Naval Diving Base." |

This glossary of "Abbreviations related to military aviation" lists both Nav Data Base and Non Directional Beacon: "NDB- Nav Data Base; Non Directional Beacon" Abbreviations related to military aviation http://www.military.cz/accessories/abbrev/n.htm |

I found another reference to the Dragon NDB of Fort Bragg, NC, in an FAA document on Location Identifiers. Its role in the document is to be associated with the Homeric location identifer "DOH." http://www.faa.gov/atpubs/lid/A_F.htm I couldn't find an explicit definition of "NDB" in the document, but section 1-2-7 seems to favor the Non Directional Beacon guess. http://www.faa.gov/atpubs/lid/CH1.htm#1-2-7 |
