How can I go about finding contact information on Software Developers who contract, and sub-contract for Video Game Publishers (ie. Capcom, Tecmo, Sony). It can be difficult just to get the names of these subsidiaries / developers much less the addresses / names of important people. Often times, even when you know the name it is not straight forward on finding their address in the phone book, and the web site almost never contains the address unless they are a major corporation like Midway. I'm just looking for a straight forward way of getting in touch with the right people in these (often very small) companies. Allow me to illustrate: RedZone Interactive is a small developer who has done some sub-contracting for 989 Studios. 989 Studios in-turn is a slightly larger company who contracts for Sony, and for other publishers. If my friend hadn't been working for RedZone I would have not the foggiest idea on how to contact them...(I've tried everything I know). The nature of this specialized and hush-hush business makes awareness without inside info difficult. One thing I thought MIGHT work, but is a bit unrealistic would be to request an annual report from the big publishers which MIGHT have at least names of their contractors / developers. So to conclude/summarize my question, I'm looking for a way to obtain contact information on companies that actually do the programming for video games (not the publishers which are big and easy to find). (Perhaps there's a such thing as a business registrar somewhere in the city/county buildings which is public info?) | |

Actually, I work in the game industry. You are correct that it is indeed difficult to find the actual developers names and contact information. In fact, I've worked on several games for large publishers and more often than not the only place the name of the company who actually wrote the game is listed is in small print in the back of the manual. The best resource online is Gamasutra's company list located at: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/contractor_display.php (specifically developers: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/contractor_display.php?category=1) The list contains a brief description and complete contact information for each company. Separate lists are maintained for developers, publishers, and contractors. You must be a registered user of Gamasutra to access this list. Registering for Gamasutra is free. Short of the company list on Gamasutra, the next best way to get contact information for developers is to attend one of the developer conferences and swap business cards. In fact, attending a developer conference is probably even a better way to get contact information if the quality of the contact information is important to you. (i.e. You want a contact who will really talk to you.) Most of the hardware manufactures host annual conferences specific to developing for their hardware, although some are hard to get in to if you are not already a licensed developer for the platform. The largest, most accessible conference to attend is GDC, the Game Developer's Conference. You can learn more about GDC at http://www.gdconf.com/ Hope this helps! |
