The plasma membrane contains many essential components; several distinct types of phospholipids, proteins, and cholesterol. Removing or destroying any one of these components completely, or drastically changing the relative amounts of any component could dramatically impare cell function. Removal of proteins and phosphatidyl serine are probably the two components that would have the greatest effect, with the addition or removal cholesterol also causing considerable consequences. |
