Do we celebrate Jesus' birthday twice (Christmas and New Year)?

Clarification of Question by tateti-ga on 31 Dec 2005 00:24 PST
I mean, we celebrate:

***Christmas: Jesus' birthday (approximate date)

***New Year Day: start of a new year, counting from Jesus' birthday
date. (approximated date).

As a matter of fact, there is an overlap in the meaning of the
celebrations, isn't it?

Nobody knows the date or year Jesus was actually born. The new year
used to being in March (centuries ago, but after Jesus).

Hi Tateti,
Nelson is right. The early Christian church usurped many heathen
dates and places to make it easier to make converts; that let them
celebrate on or about the time they had before and sometimes at the
same place - Roman temples being converted to churches, and so on.
Celebrating the winter solstice was very common, the date when the
days started to grow longer, the begining of the new year.
Officially, the Christian church calendar begins with the first Sunday
in Advent, the first of the four Sundays before Christmas Day, Dec.
25th. But the start of Advent is not greatly celebrated; Advent is a
period of anticipation of the coming of celebration of Christ's birth,
which is closer to the winter solstice on Dec. 21st or 22nd than the
beginning of our standard calendar year. When we celebrate that at
midnight on Dec. 31st, we are not celebrating Jesus' birthday again
but rather showing our disregard for the church's calendar, and we
celebrate it quite differently, some in a rather more heathen manner
with partying and drinking and fireworks.

Regards, Myoarin

Thanks guys for your comments.
I posted a similar question after this one, because since 31st Dec
till today, my questions did not show up in Google's website. I did
not know what happened. I sent them an email, but so far I got no
reply.
Best wishes,
Tateti
