Re: Cost and sources of injection moulding equipment

I am not an expert on injection nor extrusion moulding of plastic parts. I have a friend who is, in Puebla, Mexico. I can tell you the equipment is horribly expensive and complex. I went with him to a company which makes bottles for household chemcicals, and those machines are very large, as large as a normal living room in my social class. In one case, he was asked to make a replacement shaft for one that had broken. It was a three inch diameter solid steel shaft, and it twisted off under the pressures involved. He not only can make the equipment. He also makes just the molds on contract, and a basic mold will run in the USA I think he said around $4,000 plus. He makes them cheaper, and to the US standards. I am guessing a machine of any size would be many tens of thousands of dollars. They are complex. Do you need injection? In other words, are you familiar with the different methods available, or have merely heard of it and think that is the only way? Depending upon just how many parts you need, and at what rate, one would want to investigate someone who uses similar plastic materials, then consider a contract to make them, which would require only the investment of the mold, and then charge per item. Unless you are going to make tens of thousands, the cost per unit for a one-use machine would be atrocious. |

Try some companies like Demag, Negri Bossi, Billion, Arburg, Engel, Stork, Ferromatik Milacron. They will not quote prices on their websites. The cost depends on the size of the machine. You need to work from your original premise regarding 2 shots. Then work out the projected area of your product. Convert this to a moulding pressure and this will tell you the size of machine that you need. You can then ring one of the above companies and get a rough idea of cost for a specifica size of machine. For injection moulding to be ecconomical you need to be working on thousands of products and you need to factor in a limited life of your mould. An injection mould can start at £5000 for a simple product and go upto several thousands of pounds. £30,000 would not be unknown for a complex moulding. Alot depends on the number of shots and the material for the mould as its a matter of cost versus life. I would guess that £10,000 would be about right for your mould and probably £100,000-150,000 for your moulding machine but that is very much a guesstimate. |

thankyou, but this is not what i am after really. Already have rough cost of 100,000 for machinery and 20,000 for mould. |

You will need an injection molding machine, chiller, mold and possibly a compressor to manufacture your items. You will also need smaller bits and peices like mould clamps, water connectors, a big enough electrical supply with a large enough isolator box. I can supply all you need for below your budget of USD 120,000. Have a look at my website for new injection molding machines from China and used molds. If you have a design for your mold I can get this manufactured in China for you. www.mouldman.com |
