no links, just advice: if I want to buy some sort of radar/+-laser detector
to alert me whenever there's a cop car nearby (like within 200 feet
city, 1//2 mile highway), how much should I expect to spend on a new
device? OR-- what are the minimal features I should look for when
shopping for it? A 2 or 3 sentence answer would suffice.

You should look for a money back guarantee if you get a ticket. My
multiband plus laser (front and back) has never alerted me to a speed
trap's presence and I've gotten three tickets in the 12 months of use.
There have been a gajillion false alarms, though.

Embarrassingly enough, two are from the same trap location and the
third was a half mile before that trap (I groused to the obviously new
cop-- nicely, of course-- that he was SUPPOSED to be farther up the
road).

Now I just crank the car up to 80, slow down for the long sight lines,
and drive like an old lady around holidays. No tickets in the past
four months using this strategy.
