Eddie Williamson, 1884, of Chicago. He had 27 home runs that year.
Ruth broke THAT record in 1919. Of course Ruth went on to elevate
that record later:

The career record for home runs was 136 when Ruth broke it in 1921,
which had been held by Roger Connor.
