Hi! This is in reference to question:
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=327288
I would like to ask for help! Can anyone provide me with contact
information, perferrably via email, although a phone number is
acceptable, to the two organizations mentioned above?
The JAP website provides standard numbers to the business, but no
email. They don't go to people speaking english.
I'd also like to ask for an email address or phone number which can
provide information from the Land Transportation Office .....OR.....
If you can answer directly if my car will still have to go through the
Land Transportation office to be cleared into Japan. What are the
costs? (I'll pay $40 for this answer if you can provide it)
Please remember, this is a TEMPORARY import. It's a 96 Geo Metro, runs
great, no problems, and I'll be using it while I'm there. I only say
this because I always get responses about the policies of a permanent
import :-(
Thank You,
Alan Owen |

Dear coderoyal,
Since I don't know whether this information will prove useful for you,
I have decided that I don't post it as a final answer yet. Once you
have successfully used this contact information, please let me know
and I will post it as a regular answer.
This is contact information for the Japan Automobile Federation:

propose that you contact the Road Transport Bureau (alas, I did not
find an e-mail address):

Please post as an answer. The email address you provided went directly
to the english contact at JAF! I wasn't successful with the Land
Transportation Address however. I do believe you deserve some payment.
Thank You again,
Alan

Just for the benefit of the google answers service, I'll post what
I've found out so far:
According to JAP, (Japan Automobile Federation):
4. When a temporarily imported vehicle is registered in a country that
is not a party to the 1949 Convention, it must be inspected and
registered in Japan on arrival, even if imported under a Carnet de
Passages en Douane.
To clarify, vehicles imported temporarily into Japan will NOT need
inspection or pass a test if they are part of the 1949 convention. The
United States is part of this convention, therefore I will not have to
worry about making modifications to my vehicle per entry, but can
drive it right out of port.
I can't say that this is the word directly from the Ministry of Land,
although I wish it was, but I am confident that this is the answer.
