Question ID: 42825
i am using photoshop 7 for mac os X, and no matter what i do,
everything looks too red. it's not a gamma problem (other aps look
fine), and i'm loathe to adjust the levels because that's just
shifting the problem to another computer (once i author my work).
color settings have little effect. help?

When started to happen this behaviour? Did you adjust the color
settings from the edit menu?

Clarification of Question by wellsie1607-ga on 20 Jul 2002 08:15 PDT
this started with photoshop 6, and continued through my upgrade to 7.

editing the color settngs has little effect, turning off color
management has the best "dereddening" effect, but then everything is
shifted green.

i've trashed everything related to PS and reinstallled... no help.

adobe also has no answers

Dear wellsie1607,

I realise that you have probably reviewed a document such as this one
from Monaco Systems or Adobe about color management. However, in my
humble opinion, your solution lies herein.

http://www.monacosys.com/pdfs/Photoshop7Workflow.pdf

Here is another from computer darkroom, referring to digital camera
input, but also provides a very detailed description of the color
management process.

http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps7-colour/ps7_1.htm

I understand color management to cover the entire system... from your
perception of the original image to your perception of the printed
output... Thus I interpret your description that "selecting color
management makes the images in photoshop look too red" to indicate
that color management on the input side is maladjusted (this may be
compensated for on the printing side - so printed images are
acceptable).

As you say, the monitor looks fine with other applications, so the
most likely problem is therefore the profile that Photoshop is
applying to the image from your input device. I don't think you
mentioned an input device, but this does not matter to the answer as
profiles for all input devices and defaults must be correctly set up.

However, I would suggest that you follow the entire end to end color
management process described in say, the computer darkroom tutorial.
This would ensure that every setting has been checked. You may also
have problems with incorrect profiles saved with existing images.
These may need to be saved with correct profiles.

If this provides your solution, I would be happy to re-post it as an
answer, or to provide any clarification.

wellsie,
Here is the web address of a help forum for Mac Photoshop users, in
case you didn't already have it. You must be a registered owner to use
this forum. Someone there may have had your problem, or may know the
solution to it.

created from within Photoshop?

Check to see if you have the calibration set or not. Some graphics
apps, when set to print calibration, look odd on the screen. I don't
know the sequence for Photoshop (hopefully another researcher does),
but I had this problem with Corel's PhotoPaint and it was the
calibration that was awry.

What color mode are you working in? RGB or CMYK? I know I had a simiar
problem at one point, I'm working on re-producing the problem now.
I'll keep you informed.

1) Have you checked your dot gain settings? It should default to 20%.
If for some reason it got bumped up, it can radically alter the way
images are displayed.

2) Check your gamut warning color. If you have a lot of colors that
are out of the gamut for you current color mode, Photoshop is set to
display out-of-gamut warnings, and the gamut warning color is red,
that can definitely result in too much red.

Try going to File-->Color Settings-->RGB Setup...Uncheck "Display
using monitor compensation."
Hope this helps.

2 more cents:

1. Don't forget the OS level settings--that is, ColorSync. There may
be conditions under which Photoshop looks at these settings.

2. I have seen bad (corrupt or just awful) profiles. Two tests for
this: replace the actual files themselves (only the ones you are using
and specifying in ColorSync and in Photoshop). Or, select different
but similar profiles to see if the red problem goes away.

Finally, I think Adobe has somehow linked color settings for InDesign,
Illustrator, and Photoshop and each may affect the other. Maybe??

Cheers.
