I am looking for the name a jazz singer (I don't think she was a
musician too) I heard on NPR one day within the last, say, 2 years.
(I think the intervew was on sometime in '03 or maybe '04 but it could
have been 02; I doubt any earlier than that.) The two details I
remember about the interview was she was young and, if I remember
correctly, foreign, although from an anglophone country (Scotland,
Ireland, or something like that). I think she was in her young teens
when the interview was conducted although that could have been just
when she was "discovered" and started developing her Jazz talent.
(But I'm pretty sure she wasn't older than 20 when the interview was
conducted. The important point is the interviewer made a big deal
about her young age.) I think she was also a foreigner, or there was
something about how she grew up that made her ascent into the Jazz
world unforseen. (i.e. she hadn't been in love with Jazz her whole
life and then became a singer one day. She was new to Jazz when she
first heard it and fell in love with it quickly.) She first heard
Jazz when she was young (+/- 10 yrs.). I listen to alot of NPR so I
don't remember what program it was, but mostly I listen to Weekend
Edition, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Fresh Air and others.
I don't remember it being one of NPRs special Jazz shows where I
heard her interview as I don't listen to their Jazz shows regularly.
I am interested in finding the interview (recording or x-script) and
the name of the singer. |

Could you be thinking of Stacey Kent?
She's an American, but she began her career as a Jazz singer while
studying in England. She was interviewed on NPR in October 2003.

Could you be looking for Katie Melua?

Stacey Kent:
While this lead looked promising (I found this before I posted the
question), the interview didn't make any particular mention of her
young age so it's not what I'm looking for.
Katie Melua:
While I cannot discount Katie Melua as the person I heard, I found no
interview (indeed no mention at all) of her on NPR's website, so this
itn't it.

Here's another candidate. I think there is a chance that Nellie
Mackay is the singer you remember. She was interviewed by Bob Edwards
on NPR's "Morning Edition" on February 26, 2004. She was born in
England and was 19 when the interview was conducted. Here is a link
to the NPR page that contains a link to the interview. Have a listen
and tell me what you think:
