Hello. I have an interesting and puzzling problem.

Background:
I purchased a 32" Sony LCD TV for use as a computer monitor: Sony
KLV-32M1 with native resolution 1366 x 768. I am using a DVI output
from my graphics card to the HDMI input on the back of the TV. I get a
picture but I am unable to get the exact native resolution. The
original card was an ATI Radeon 9600 256Mb AGP video card. All sorts of
resolutions were available with this card, even up to 1920 x
1080---except for 1366 x 768---but the picture was always slightly
fuzzy and horizontal lines flickered annoyingly at all resolutions
(interlaced signal from the card?). The LCD's on-screen display said
the signal is 1080i. I used various applications like PowerStrip to
set the resolution to 1366 x 768, without success. I cannot find the
timing data for this LCD TV so it was mostly trial and error.

So I purchased an expensive graphics card for widescreen TVs: Imagine
Graphics' Pixel Perfect AGP card, which is able to set the resolution
to exactly 1366 x 768. On my CRT test monitor I am able to see 1366 x
768, but the LCD does not display this. The only resolution I get is
1280 x 720, which is workable, but not perfect. The LCD's OCD reads
720p, and the menu looks extremely clear compared to the computer's
output, but at least the flickering lines are gone! I am able to use
the LCD monitor now, but even using PowerStrip with the new card I
cannot seem to find the correct timing settings to display a picture
at 1366 x 768. The screen is black and sometimes flickers when I'm
toying with the timing data. I switch back to 1280 x 720 and it works
fine.

My question: Is there a solution to display 1366 x 768 that will work
with this LCD monitor?

Some clues:
Timing Data--Does Sony publish the timing data for this model?

Is the monitor blocking signals that don't conform to 720p or 1080i?
How to bypass? Is this a setting on the monitor? Is there service mode
option using the remote? Is the DVI - HDMI interface somehow blocking
out the desired resolution? If so, why am I able to see many other
resolutions?

Is there some other software or hardware that tricks the monitor into
believing it's receiving a 720p or 1080i signal when the actual
resolution is 1366 x 768?

Your help is appreciated. I have been researching possibilities for
the last month so I'm looking for a very specific solution that I
haven't tried, or perhaps new insight on a current course of action.
Right now my only hope is PowerStrip. Thank you for your time.

Hello kanoa -

Unfortunately, per information given to me from a 3rd tier technical
support specialist at Sony, the HDMI input is not meant for computer
use. Even if you got it to work on some level, as you have this in
case, 1280x720 would be one of -- if not the only -- resolution it
would see it at. Also, they don't release any timing data to the
public for this product. The official at Sony didn't know of a
work-around. Your best bet is to find electronics forums on the net
where perhaps someone might know of a device or other means of finding
a workaround.
