I know both two and three-toed Sloths are solitary animals, but apparently they do migrate in groups on occasion. So I was wondering what the collective noun is for a group of Sloths! |
|
There is no answer at this time. |

Great question! I have found no official name for a group of sloths, but I rather like "a slumber of sloths," which appears here: "A slumber of sloths*: Sloths are solitary, although 2-toed females may group together and outnumber males by 10:1. Sloths mate high in the trees, and apparently, like everything else they do, they take a long time ! After mating, the male doesn't 'hang' around (!!) and leaves the female to raise her baby alone. A sloth is usually silent, but may make low plaintive calls. (*We made up this collective noun!)" http://www.szgdocent.org/ff/f-sloth.htm And here's a newsgroup post that suggests "a lethargy of sloths": http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=39602882.70EB%40MegsINet.net&output=gplain My own suggestion: "a dawdle of sloths." Reminds me of "a gaggle of geese." I also like "a plod of sloths" and "an amble of sloths." Hope someone can find something official for you so that my mind will stop coming up with suggestions. ;-) |

Incidentally, many sources give the term for a group of bears as "a sloth of bears." ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22a+sloth+of+bears However, "a bear of sloths" doesn't make much sense, unless your group of sloths is in a grumpy mood. |

My boyfriend came up with "a torpor of sloths"! I guarantee any official name will be far less interesting than the ones you suggested! |

I like "a torpor of sloths" very much. That's a clever boyfriend you've got there. How about "a tedium of tardigrades?" "Within tardigrades, the living three-toed sloth Bradypus is suggested to represent the sister-taxon to all other sloths." http://www.vertpaleo.org/jvp/15-672-705.html |

Ooooh, that's good! I'm going to have to find a reason to call them tardigrades from now on, just to confound my friends! I also like "a stupor of sloths". |

"A snooze of sloths" is rather cozy. |

From the Yiddish, "a shlep of sloths." http://www.hyperdictionary.com/dictionary/shlep |

Ah, sloths in the workplace. I am very familiar with that, since I spent a decade working for the government. "A lag of sloths" is short and slow. |

Working with Sloths, what a great job! I liked the Yiddish one as well, here in New Zealand we don't hear much of that! Continuing the alliteration theme one could have "a boredom of bradypus" or "a brace of bradypus". I also like "a narcolepsy of sloths". |

If we're making some up, how about these?: "a loiter of slobs" "a malinger of sub-velocipedes" "a laggard of sloths" "a lull of sloths" "a dawdle" |

>> Apparently there's only so much you can say about sloths. So true. I am feeling drowsy just thinking about this question. :-D "A snore of sloths." "A zzzzz of sloths." What do you call a group of twelve sloths? A dozin'. |

There is a type of bear called the 'sloth bear' http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/13.shtml If that is the case (according to Pink's links) could there be a sloth of sloth bears? According to http://www.bio.ic.ac.uk/evolve/people/rich/Life/lifefacts.html "If there were no natural predators of sloths, in 14,000,000 years time the Earth would be covered in a layer of sloths 35 cm thick." "A delay of sloths" is mentioned at http://www.davezilla.com/archives/00001022.html This site http://slothsonline.com/sloth-qu.html is also lacking a name...perhaps the best "A sprint of sloths" was suggested at http://www.rottentomatoes.com/vine/showthread.php?t=215709 Who makes these things official, anyhow? |

I always assumed if something is in a dictionary it is "official", but then anyone can publish a dictionary if they have the time and the inclination.... I found this site when I was initially looking for the collective noun: http://www.askoxford.com/asktheexperts/collective/?view=uk How about "a frenzy of sloths"? |

Clytemnestra, I hadn't forgotten about you, but further research on this has led me nowhere. :-( On the bright side, a recent question about the name for a group of raccoons was answered promptly: http://www.answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=441751 This comment will boost the question to the top of the Researchers' queue again. Maybe someone else will succeed where I have failed. By golly, if there is an official name for a bunch of sloths, I want to know. ~Pink |
