Hello kilboj-ga,

Thank-you for your question.

Commander in Chief was aired on the ABC network in the 9/8c timeslot
in the USA. It began airing on 27 September 2005, the last aired
episode was on 29 November 2005 before going on hiatus for the holiday
period. The next episode will return on 10 January 2006 with a
further episode on 17 January 2006. There is no further information
on air dates after this at the present time.

The next episode has been summarised as this:
"Mac must deal with a crisis of international proportions - with
potentially devastating consequences - when a U.S. submarine in a
covert operation off the coast of North Korea runs into trouble.
Meanwhile, Mac considers running for election in the next presidential
race, with Dickie McDonald advising what her campaign strategy should
be, and her family -- minus Rebecca -- supportive of the decision. And
Jayne Murray, in her new role of lobbyist, finds herself questioning
what her future holds, on the first of a special two-part story arc of
Commander In Chief."

so is CIC more a mini series than a weekly show? That is, it will
come and go as they have stories? Was this the original intent? How
did it fare in the ratings? I was more interested in the why of what
happened than a schedule.

how many episodes aired?

CIC is not a weekly series but a weekly show. Like many/most US
television shows it took a break over the holiday period (if you go to
TV.com and search for other popular shows, such as Desperate
Housewives or Lost, you will notice the same pattern in their tv
schedules).

The epguides.com website details how many shows have aired (or are
currently due to air):

Season 1
101 27 Sep 05 Pilot
102 4 Oct 05 First Choice
103 11 Oct 05 First Strike
104 18 Oct 05 First Dance
105 25 Oct 05 First... Do No Harm
108 1 Nov 05 First Disaster
107 8 Nov 05 First Scandal
108 15 Nov 05 Rubie Dubidoux and the Brown Bound Express
109 29 Nov 05 The Mom Who Came to Dinner
110 10 Jan 06 Sub Enchanted Evening
111 17 Jan 06 No Nukes Is Good Nukes

(Note: 111 indicates Season 1, episode 11.)

Your original question did not include how well the show did in the
ratings so I did not address this; you may have more luck asking
another Google Answers question for specific information on this.

However, CIC has a strong following on the TV.com website which is
always a good indication of how well loved the show is, indeed it
rates 8.1 out of ten. Some specific ratings information is available
for each show by clicking on the episode summary link from the TV.com
episode guide link I gave previously. For instance episode 6 had
15.61 million viewers.

Further evidence that CIC is a popular show is that it is available as
a download on iTunes.com.

it's scheduled to return on next tuesday on abc's webpage and
tvguide.com. ABC ordered a full fall season in October.

I believe it's been on for the entire fall television "season," i.e.,
it's not a midseason replacement.

Most stations monkey with their typical schedules during the
holidays--sports, holiday specials, etc. Also, people probably don't
watch as much tv during this time period, so networks wait to get
everyone back at home before going on with the plotlines.

It would seem that Commander in Chief should have returned at this
point. I'm confused as to why a show with such strong ratings and an
Emmy winning lead would disappear from the lineup...I'm missing the
show.
