Hi forwardcontroler3, I went around the Internet and compiled a list of unused and unneeded file extensions that are 100% safe to delete. To use this, go to START | SEARCH | ALL FILES AND FOLDERS | ....in "ALL OR PART OF THE FILE NAME" --copy and paste this into the text entry box. ---> *.tmp,*.chk,*.Gid,*.old,*.bak,*.cnt,*.---, *.~*,~*.*,*.000,*.001,*.002,*.~??,*.??$,*.$$$,*.dmp,*.ftg,*.fts,*.DB$,*.$DB, <--- I found 148 files on my computer, totalling about 25mb's of space. Plus, although the files above are safe to delete, some of them won't delete because they are inside programs installation files or CAB files. I couldn't "select all" to delete, I had to pick through them. Additionally, these are single files you can delete: chklist.*,file???._dd,file????._dd,mcreate.dir,bootlog.prv, 'What to Throw Away' http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win95/1006245080?s Cyber Tech Help http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=506070#post506070 Your best bet might be to get one of the many freeware hard drive cleaners available on the net: Utilities - File & Disk Management - Cleanup Tools http://www.freeware-guide.com/dir/util/cleanup.html Good luck, I hope this helps! ~~Cynthia Search strategy used at Gggole: unused OR unneeded files extensions remove OR delete hard drive maintain freeware |

Hi Warning: Back up all your documents first. You are very likely to accidentally delete something you later want, and it's so much better to do as full a backup as possible. If you have a CD writer, a blank CD will cost around 0.30 USD/EUR (0.20 GBP) and will probably hold every Word file, Excel document and so on that you have ever written! As with all backups, the best way is to make two copies and then get a friend or relative to store one (to protect against a fire) and keep the other. CHeck the backup has worked. Once you have done your backups, be very ruthless with your deletions - the fewer files you have on your hard disk, the easier it is to find what you need as well! Ratty |
