We had one in Iowa in 1958. You had to pre-heat the coils, as I
remember it. Wonder if the smog issues has obsoleted them. They
really weren't that efficient, it was a lot faster to cut the weeks,
or hit the roots with a pick-axe.

thanks for the input irlandes. they are real efficient for roasting
the seeds that have not germinated from an ancient gorse infestation.
i am still actively hunting one. believe that emissions are not reason
for demise, convienience of LPG did them in. way less "smog" than 2
cycle gas engines.

I have the weed burner that you have just descibed. My grandfather
bought it in the early 1950s. I have been surfing the web, trying to
find out what kind of fuel it used. (I am glad that you mentioned
kerosene as I was just about to try some coleman fuel in it.) It has a
small tank w/shoulder strap and pumps up like a coleman stove. I am
sorry to say it is not for sale as I have an immidiate need for it.
It has no label or stamp on it to identify its manufacturer but it
looks similer to a 89FB21282MS Ward's "Flamethrower" I saw at another
site.
I will continue looking for information and will contact you if I find something.

I've been looking for something like this. I've got a large gravel
drive that currently requires a lot of roundup to keep clear. I
remember seeing these wheeled kerosene-fueled weedburners in my
childhood in the UK. I always wanted one, even then!

I found this link:

http://www.ferndale-lodge.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?product=565025

The unit is quite expensive (probably $400+ after shipping etc.) and
may only be available in the UK.

btw - if you're still searching, try using 'paraffin' in your search
terms - that's what the brits call kerosene.
