The recent reports surrounding Ariel Sharon's failing health have got
me wondering: is Ariel Sharon enormously obese? I could be wrong (and
please let me know if I am), but I seem to remember that when he was
elected he was, at most, slightly paunchy. But in recent years I've
seen pictures where he seems to have an shockingly large gut.

I am looking for links to articles or websites that include any of the
following: pictures of Sharon where his weight gain is evident
("before" and/or "after" pictures are acceptable), discussion about
his weight gain in recent years, approximations of his weight, reports
on his eating habits, favorite foods, etc.

I know this is a low-priced question, so, obvsiously, I'm not
expecting a huge amount of research--just a few links.

Dear stancranley-ga

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.
According to most sources 78 year old Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon is 5?7? tall and weighs 255 lbs. Let?s make a comparison of
that information against leading insurance provider Met Life?s chart
for ideal weight for men:

Ideally a 5' 7" man of small build should weight in the range of 138-145 lbs.
Ideally a 5' 7" man of medium build should weight in the range of 142-154 lbs.
Ideally a 5' 7" man of large build should weight in the range of 149-168 lbs.

That said, Mr. Sharon is at best, 100 lbs or more overweight
regardless of his build considering his age and existing health
problems.

Obesity is determined by the rating one has on the Body Mass Index
(BMI) scale. According to the Centers for Disease Control obesity is
generally defined as a condition in which a person has in excess of 30
on the Body Mass Index (BMI) scale. Below 18.5 is considered
underweight, normal is 18.5 ? 24.9, overweight is 25.0 ? 29.9, and
30.0 and above is considered obese. Using Mr. Sharon?s data in the CDC
calculator he rates 39.9 BMI, which is inarguably in excess of merely
obese and is officially in the realm of what is generally considered
morbidly obese.

As with most people who suffer health problem related to chronic
obesity, Ariel Sharon has been overweight for many years. In fact, he
was never a slender man. In this 1955 photo Mr. Sharon (standing,
second from left) is appears to be a fairly fit soldier of relatively
ideal weight for his build:

In this undated photo, believed to have been taken in the early to mid
1970?s, Sharon was perhaps a bit overweight already but probably not
unhealthy yet because of it.

By 1976 Sharon?s weight had obviously increased to some extent but was
probably not a health issue:

In 1990 Sharon was still fairly fit looking though this would probably
be the last period of his life in which he would be first be
considered overweight:

By 1991 Sharon was, by all accounts, obese:

According to multiple sources Mr. Sharon enjoyed a good meal ? perhaps
too much. It is said that he enjoyed Bloody Marys or wine during
dinner and that he that he resisted ?fish-oriented? meals his wife
tried to impose on him, regularly opting instead for a large steak
which he liked to define as ?my size?.

UNITED JERUSALEM
http://www.unitedjerusalem.org/index2.asp?id=676460

Gil Hoffman, one of the Jerusalem Post's correspondents in the Israeli
parliament, the Knesset, said Sharon liked spending time in the
canteen, ?The man likes to eat, and sometimes he spends hours in
here?? ?Sharon is the only Knesset member who has his own seat in the
cafeteria.?

Today Mr. Sharon is gravely ill in part, say some experts, due to his
obesity. Of course, we wish him well.

I hope you find that my answer exceeds your expectations. If you have
any questions about my research please post a clarification request
prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your
final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the
near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
