In the past few seasons or more, regular season NFL games were, with a
few exceptions, generally broadcast in 1 of 4 ways:
1) On Monday Night Football (national broadcast on ABC)
2) On Sunday Night Football (national broadcast on ESPN)
3) As nationally televised game on Sunday at 4PM (FOX for NFC or CBS for AFC)
4) As a regionally televised game (only available in the media markets
represented by the teams in the game) on FOX or CBS
I am wondering about the details of the process by which it is
determined how each game will be broadcast. I know that this process
is being altered for the 2006/07 season, but my question is about how
they've done it in the recent past up until the 2005/06 season.
Who decides, for each week of the season, which game will be played
Monday night, which will be played Sunday night, which will be
national Sunday afternoon, and which will be regional sunday
afternoon?
When is the broadcast schedule determined?
Does one network get first dibs for every week of the season? Or does
1st pick rotate from week to week?
To what extent do these broadcast and timing decisions involve
collaboration with other stakeholders, such as stadium operators,
municipalities, team owners, etc. |
