I'd like to find a system that I could use as a tool for internal
communication to a set of plasma/LCD screens throughout an
orginisation. The system I'm looking for would control what's on the
screen. I would like this to be RSS based if possible. The system
should be able to receive and feed SMS messages, mail, and video
clips.
If you can find a product that has an agency in South Africa already
it would be nice, but not essential.

Hello -
Can you expand upon the term "system?" Are you looking for a piece of
software to run on an existing computer, or a stand-alone piece of
hardware? Also, the "broadcasting" capability is probably independent
of the system. E.g., you could have a computer running a piece of
software, with the video signal of the computer going into a video
distributor/splitter that displays the video onto multiple screens in
your organization. Are you interested in the hardware side of things
as well as software? Also, by RSS, do you literally mean "must be
based on the RSS XML application?"

What my client has tasked us to create is a comprehensive internal
communication system. We would need to put in the hardware and the
software, essentially it would be a media server of sorts.
I believe that RSS/XML is the way to go. The concept I sold them on
was that they would be able to update easily via email, sms, or blog,
this excited them no-end. My guess that the RSS technology would be
perfect for this, my concern is that as it is so cheap (free?) most
people providing these services would rather sell a proprietary
solution. I'm not sure if that is the best route.
As well as those notifications, we would like to run traffic, weather
and stock reports as well as posters (jpegs?) of upcoming events at
set intervals.
We will also produce 2 5-minute video inserts a day that will run. We
will have the source machine for these videos internally so we can
simply use a switcher/vision mixer of sorts to do that, my worry is
the rest of the stuff, we'd like this to be easy to use, but fairly
programmable (an oxymoron, sorry).
Good luck,
Rich...!
