i'm going to the canadian rockies to get some work (writing) done. and as such i have very specific requirements for a hotel room: 1) good, close view in and of the mountains (for inspiration) 2) high-speed(broadband) internet connection 3) 24-hr room service 4) around 200 USD/night i've been looking at hotels in the banff/jasper/lake louise (alberta) area and its been a struggle finding one that met all 4 criteria. My best bet - the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is $500/night (www.fairmont.com/lakelouise/). Second choice - Rimrock Resort (www.rimrockresort.com) - has spotty internet. And third choice - Buffalo Mountain Lodge(www.crmr.com/buffalo_mountain_lodge.php) - doesn't have 24-hr room service. i didn't think it would be this hard. Maybe I'm being too picky with the view? after all, i don't need a spectacular view just a good, unobstructed one. and maybe all hotels in banff have good views but don't say so explicitly because they're not spectacular (to the locals)? otherwise, i'm very flexible - it could be a decrepid shack in the woods or a roach motel as long as it fits the 4 criteria! And it doesn't have to be exactly Banff/Jasper, anywhere within a 200 mile radius would be fine. So the Question is: What is the name (and number) of the hotel (and room number if my criteria are not hotel-wide) that I'm trying to find? |

http://www.mysticsprings.ca/ In room broadband, spectacular view, NOT in Banff (you may appreciate that when you find out how noisy Banff can be), within your price range...not sure on the 24 hour room service. Good Luck |

I'm afraid you are being too picky for the price range you want. I have lived in Banff for 15 years, so I have a pretty good idea what's available. For inspiring mountain views, you need a spot in Banff, or Chateau Lake Louise. Not Canmore, not Jasper - those are places to stay and then make trips out into the mountains. They are not "in" the mountains the way you mean it. In Banff, the truly spectacular views are at either the Fairmont Banff Springs, or the Rimrock Resort Hotel. These are both across the river from downtown Banff, where you get unobstructed views of mountain splendor. The "view" rooms at those places go for much more than $200/night. They both have all the amenities you'd want - I'm not sure where you get the idea that Internet service at Rimrock would be spotty, I doubt that. There are plenty of cheaper hotels in downtown Banff, but you won't get spectacular views from the rooms. Outside yes, inside no. But if you think that would work, add a coment, and I'll give you some suggestions. Chateau Lake Louise has a spectacular view, even better than the Banff choices (much closer up, but less sweeping). Again, a "view" room is way out of your price range. As in Banff, you won't get that kind of view from an alternative hotel in Lake Louise townsite. Within your price range, with spectacular views, you need to go to a lodge more out of the way, such as Num-Ti-Jah Lodge (on the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper). Places like that don't have adequate Internet connections. The Banff Center is an arts education institution and conference facility. They have writers' retreats, including isolated "cabins in the woods" as well as luxury hotel-style facilities. Not 24 hour room service, and only semi-view. But if you have long lead time, it would be worth looking into. Sorry, no magic answer. You'll have to compromise to make it work. For example, one of several hotels in the Tunnel Mountain area of Banff (Douglas Fir Resort, Hidden Ridge Chalets etc.). They would be in your price range, the views would be decent (because you are well up, a couple hundred feet above the downtown), but you'd have to settle for less than 24-hour room service. Maybe you should just swap houses with me :) |

Canadian Country Cabins in Crescent Spur BC sounds like the perfect spot for you. It is located about 120 miles from Jasper between the Rocky and Caribou mountain ranges. The private cabins have an amazing view and are not close to any other lodges so the quiet atomsphere is stimulating. There is broadband internet included. www.canadiancountrycabins.com |
