Dear mongolia-ga,

One US citizen died during the Cuban Missile Crisis: USAF Major Rudolf
Anderson, Jr., a U2 pilot. He was shot down while flying high over
Cuba conducting a reconnaissance mission

"As the plane flew over the Cuban naval facilities at Banes, a
Soviet-built SA-2 "Guideline" surface-to-air missile (SAM) was fired
at the U-2A in violation of specific instructions from Soviet Premier
Krushchev not to fire on US reconnaissance planes. The SAM warhead
detonated in close proximity to the U-2A and a small piece of shrapnel
from it penetrated the cockpit and punctured Anderson's pressure suit
causing him to become unconscious. Anderson was killed in the crash of
his plane and was the only man killed during the crisis."
