Dennis,
While there are no shortage of chess players, chess clubs, or chess
tournaments in Southern California, there is certainly a lack of both
chess stores and chess websites. Perhaps chess players are simply too
engrossed in the game to devote themselves to either commerce or
web-design.
However, there are at least two options in the area, and perhaps some
online sources you may want to consider as well.
The premier chess shop in SoCal seems to be the Chess Palace:
http://www.chesspalace.com/
Chess Palace
4336 Katella Ave
Los Alamitos CA 90720
"Los Angeles and Orange County's Premier Chess Club & Store"
weekday: 310-594-3475
weekend: 562-598-5099
chesspalaceusa@yahoo.com
Some of their more popular products are shown here:
http://www.chesspalace.com/productssale.htm
They keep fairly odd hours, and are not open at all the times you
might expect a retail store to be open, so be sure to call ahead
before stopping by.

The other well-regarded source in the area is:
http://www.amchesseq.com/contact.html
AMERICAN CHESS EQUIPMENT
524 S. Avenida Faro
Anaheim, CA 92807
1-866-817-8588
Direct: (714) 998-5508
Fax: (714) 998-1160
amchesseq@adelphia.net
"For more than 20 years, A.C.E. has provided superior quality American
Chess Equipment at wholesale prices to Schools, Clubs, Stores, and
Organizations, which includes Resellers and Retailers. We are now
also open to the Individual Consumer"
This is a home-based business, so it doesn't operate as a conventional
storefront. However, they are glad to have potential customers come
by on an appointment basis to see their wares, so give them a call (or
an email) before showing up.

The ChessManiac Shop operates out of Paso Robles, but typically sells
in bulk to clubs, etc. They may be worth contacting, though their
selection certainly does not appear to be as broad as the suppliers I
mentioned above:

WholesaleChess is not in Southern California -- nor are they a walk-in
store --but I noticed it recommended at several sites as a good source
of chess sets:
http://www.wholesalechess.com/
"The online chess store for chess sets, giant chess pieces, chess
boards, chess equipment, tournament supplies, chess clocks and digital
timers, chess bags, chess software, chess books, chess videos & DVDs,
and more!"

The ChessStore.com is another well-regarded online supplier"

I wish there was more that I could direct you to. But I spoke with a
number of chess afficianados in the area, and other than major toy
store retailers, there just doesn't seem to be very many options in
and around Los Angeles.
However, please don't rate this answer until you have everything you
need. If you would like any additional information, just post a
Request for Clarification to let me know how I can assist you further,
and I'm at your service.
All the best,
