The definitive Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names lists 40 Cairo's: http://www.getty.edu/vow/TGNServlet?nation=&english=Y&find=cairo&place=&page=1 but since the one in Egypt is listed twice, it looks like the answer is 39! The list provided appears to exclude Cairo, Illinois (although it does include its (separate) little neighbor, Cairo Junction,IL). |

Whoops, I take it back. It lists Cairo under the heading of Cairo Junction for some reason. |
