I'm trying to find a source for an in-door speaker portal. If that's
what it's called. I've also looked under "port," and "hole" and other
terms. Usually what I find are car-stereo installations. I've
searched the web and asked a couple of hardware stores to search their
catalogs, without success. What I'm talking about used to be fairly
common--I have one, but there's no mfgr's. name on it. It's a
rectangular metal mini-door about 3" wide & 5" high that is screwed
into a hole one cuts in one's door and thru which one can talk to
strangers who ring the bell. It would enable women to avoid opening
their doors to the criminally minded. There's a DA in NJ who's
crusading against this sort of crime, and I want to forward this tip
to her. But I need to have a product-source first.

Hello rogerk and thank you for your question.

Is this the kind of device you are looking for?

"This decorative door speaker mounts into a standard double gang
electrical box available at a local hardware store or can be flush
mounted. It's very weather resistant and comes with a 2 year warranty.
The call button is a very high tech non-mechanical sensor type. No
need to push in - just touch."

Or are you looking for a non electrical version?

Yes, I was looking for a non-electrical version. I want something
cheap that can be installed by a tyro. (Also, the swing-door version
I'm looking for has the virtue of allowing the dweller to observe the
caller.) Cheapness & simplicity would mean that the gov't. and
consumer advisors could recommend it without reservation to all
members of the public. (IMO, state and/or gov'ts. should also mandate
that all new residential entrance doors include this feature.)

But thanks for your information.
