My research indicates that PLO, Hezbollah, Muslim Brotherhood and ANO
found refuge along with some Syrian and Saudi off-shoots and trained
south of Bagdahd at a camp...all prior to the Iraqi invasion. The
Ansar al-Islam group sort of swallowed a Kurdish group and operated in
north in Kurdish territory under Zaqarwi and was a recipient of seed
money from Al-Qaeda. I get the impression that Ansar al-Islam has
faded, Zaqarwi has moved on to become a major leader forming a new
organization that operates separatly but in cooperation with various
Mullahs and Sadam's party leftovers. A collection of outsiders fill
the ranks for the Jihad...are you sure these are all currently active
organizations? My understanding is that Zaqarwi is not Al-Qaeda but
operates in parallel as a separate organization due to their
philosophical differences. I am really foggy on the current line-up.

Hi tar0867-ga!

In truth I have the same observations as you do but as a researcher
providing an answer and stating reliable information then I have to go
with the list supplied by US Department of State. Since they are the
ones mainly monitoring and classifying these groups then we have to
rely on their info that these organizations are still in Iraq or are
still having activities in Iraq and are still potential threats.

Thanks!

I understand that the Palestinians are trying not to be identified
with Al Quaeda et al.

Something to do with a slip up in 1991 and some hefty revenue.
- worth checking
