Hi,

I downloaded a codec file onto Window Media Player 10 and now I do not
have any audio. I tried to play a sound file and it asked me if I
wanted to download the file. I do not recall the name of it. Now WMP10
does not have audio. I tried reinstalling it over my existing WMP10
and no luck. Any suggestions?

Have you tried removing the offending codec from
My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager
-> Sound, video and game controllers -> Audio Codecs?

Let me know if this resolves your problem, and I'll
post it as a formal answer.

Hello sublime1,

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you said and disabling each codec
one at a time and playing a song and it did not work. By the way, I
did not reboot the computer after disabling each codec...I have a
screenshot of the codecs I have...there are more than 10 of them. Let
me know if I can email them to you.

I was considering removing WMP 10 from my pc but this will not remove
or fix the codec problem...right?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Angel

You disabled them, as in selecting "do not use this audio codec",
or you removed them? If you removed them, they would no longer
appear in the dialog. If you disabled them, without removing
them, this may not resolve the problem of one specific codec
interfering with playback.

I would suggest finding out the name of the codec you installed
(look through your browser history), and completely removing
only that codec. Rebooting should not be required, that I'm
aware of. The GA terms of service don't allow personal contact
between customers and researchers. You can post a screenshot
at any number of free photo storage sites, and the link here.

Uninstalling WMP 10 without removing the offending codec will
not resolve the problem. Codecs are not removed when WMP 10
is uninstalled.

Worst comes to worst, you could uninstall WMP 10, then REMOVE
all your codecs, and reinstall WMP 10. That should reinstall
most commonly-used codecs, but you run the risk of removing
codecs installed by other media players, such as your sound
card software, DVD players, etc.

I thought I'd check in and ask if you've made any progress
with this. How's it going?

Hello sublime1,

After hours trying to get WMP working I uninstalled it and reinstalled
it and now it works. I have no idea what happened. Please post as a
formal answer as you have been a great help!!
