Which Country Music songs mention or refer to the game of football or
playing football. I'm specifically looking for songs looking back on
high school football games in a 'times gone by' sort of way.

I enjoy country music, and I'll bet I can find a few songs for you,
but before I get started, it would be very helpful to know
approximately how many songs would constitute a satisfactory list.
When asking for lists of things, it's understandable that customers
usually want "as many as possible," but from a Researcher's
standpoint, it's good to know what the customer's expectations are.
Most of us have had the experience of working hard for several hours
compiling a list, and then finding out afterward that the customer
expected a much longer list.

I would love to have three songs to use as background for a slideshow
of still photos I took at my son's high school football games. I'm the
Booster Club photographer, I'm down on the sidelines, and my photos
are amateur, but really good. I did this last year for the Seniors on
the team and want to top last year's slideshow because this year MY
son is a Senior, the QB and the Captain. Last year I used the
beginning of Kenny Chesney's 'Never Gonna Feel that Way Again'
followed by Tim McGraw's 'My Old Friend' and closed with Keith Urban's
'These Are The Days'. There wasn't a dry eye in the house ..... nobody
knew what to expect from my slideshow, but it meant a lot to the
Seniors and their parents. Help me! One portion of the slideshow
features the Senior suited up before a game flanked by his folks. My
son thinks Dierks Bentley's 'My Last Name' would be a good fit for
that part. I think we can do better. Thanks!

The lyrics look great for Blaine Larson song, Jared Fallon, and Forty
5 South, but I have to listen to the music. Heading out of town this
morning for two days. I'll give a listen when I get back. Thanks.

Back home again ... appreciate the input. 'No. 29' won't work, Garth's
'Unanswered Prayers' won't work, but I had hoped it would. I don't
need love and romance in this ... high school football, hitting hard,
loving it, end of the season, memories type stuff. Rainbow ..... I
can't locate tracks of Blaine Larson, Jared Fallon, or Forty 5 South,
but the lyrics look awesome. Can you point me in the right direction
to listen and then hopefully buy this music? Amazon, Napster are no
help.

I always liked this one:
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/garthbrooks/unansweredprayers.html

"Unanswered Prayers"

Just the other night at a hometown football game
My wife and I ran into my old high school flame
And as I introduced them the past came back to me
And I couldn't help but think of the way things used to be

She was the one that I'd wanted for all times
And each night I'd spend prayin' that God would make her mine
And if he'd only grant me this wish I wished back then
I'd never ask for anything again

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

She wasn't quite the angel that I remembered in my dreams
And I could tell that time had changed me
In her eyes too it seemed
We tried to talk about the old days
There wasn't much we could recall
I guess the Lord knows what he's doin' after all

And as she walked away and I looked at my wife
And then and there I thanked the good Lord
For the gifts in my life

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs
That just because he may not answer doesn't mean he don't care
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

Some of God's greatest gifts are all too often unanswered...
Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

"The Last Game of the Season" (also known as "The Blind Man in the
Bleachers") was a hit on the country charts for Kenny Starr. It was
then re-tooled as a pop song and became a hit for David Geddes.

The Last Game of the Season (The Blind Man in the Bleachers)
http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/dtrad/pages/tiLASTGAME.html

"It is rumored that Brett Favre was seen by his locker silently
weeping as he listened to the old tune 'The Blind Man in the
Bleachers.' That song was a 1975 phenomenon made famous by country
music singer Kenny Starr....The ditty was a big hit and reached number
two on the C&W charts. A week later, David Geddes knew a winner when
he heard it and jazzed the song up for the pop stations and called it
'The Last Game of the Season.' Geddes took that version to number 18
on the pop charts."

Maryeileen --

In additon to the songs offered up by pinkfreud, rainbow and redhoss,
here ae a few suggestions from my brother, author of the THE GREEN
BOOK OF SONGS BY SUBJECT: THE THEMATIIC GUIDE TO POPULAR MUSIC:

"The most obvious choice is 'Drop Kick Me Jesus Through The Goalposts
Of Life' by Bobby Bare. Then there's 'Great Joe Bob (A Regional
Tragedy)' by Country Gazette, 'Another Football Year' by Jeannie C.
Riley, 'Armchair Quarterback' by Ray Stevens and 'Words By Heart' by
Billy Ray Cyrus."

Not sure it would be entirely appropriate but No. 29 by Steve Earle is
a great song...

We were playin' Smithville big boys, farm boys
Second down and four to go
Bubba brought the play in good call my ball
Now they're gonna see a show
But Bubba let his man go I cut back, heard it crack
It still hurts me but I don't mind
Reminds me I was No. 29
