The snack issue has struck again. This time I am looking for ideas for a preschool class. The week's theme is arctic and penguins. I would like a cute recipe for a snack that looks like penguins. Preferably it would be nutritious, and please no cupcakes. |

I'm glad you liked my suggestion! I've reposted the material below: "Penguin Cookies Ingredients: 1 chocolate sandwich cookie per child 1 chocolate kiss per child Have students wash their hands. Give each child a napkin, cookie, and chocolate kiss. They twist the top off of their cookie and carefully break it in half. They place the two pieces on top of the bottom half with the icing side up and spread a little out for wings. Then they place the chocolate kiss at the top for the penguins head." ChildFun Family Website: Penguin Activities http://www.childfun.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=80 Here's a cute variant that uses candy corn as little penguin feet: "OREO PENGUIN SNACK Oreo cookie Candy Corn Hershey Kiss OPTIONAL: White icing or frosting Directions: Divide the Oreo into two pieces. (An adult can do this easily without breaking the cookies by using a sharp knife.) Break or cut (with serrated knife) the half that does not have the icing on it. Unwrap candy Kiss and push the flat part into the frosting of the Oreo cookie. Take the two halves of the other part of the cookie and place on icing with curved sides facing the center. Use two pieces of candy corn to make the feet OPTIONAL: Eyes can be added using small pieces of icing or by 'stealing' a little bit of frosting with a toothpick." DLTK's Crafts for Kids: Oreo Penguin Snack http://www.dltk-kids.com/recipes/oreopenguin.htm I found these goodies with the use of this Google search string: Google Web Search: "penguin snack OR snacks OR cookies" ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22penguin+snack+OR+snacks+OR+cookies%22 I'll close with a joke that a first-grader told me recently: Q: What is black and white and black and white and black and white? A: A penguin rolling down the stairs. Best always, Pink |

I know this isn't practical, but this would be a very cute snack. A penguin-shaped waffle! http://www.monstershop.com.au/product_p/app0000254.htm |

Here are some snacks that sound easy to make: "Penguin Snack 1 slice of bread per child, spread cream cheese over top. Use 1/2 black olives for eyes (or raisins), wedge of carrot for beak, chopped black olives for wings. Penguin Cookies Ingredients: 1 chocolate sandwich cookie per child 1 chocolate kiss per child Have students wash their hands. Give each child a napkin, cookie, and chocolate kiss. They twist the top off of their cookie and carefully break it in half. They place the two pieces on top of the bottom half with the icing side up and spread a little out for wings. Then they place the chocolate kiss at the top for the penguins head." http://www.childfun.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=80 |

Pinfreud's links are great, and everybody loves Eskimo Pie! Would a baked Alaska be over the top? Why not serve chicken and call it penguin? We need to provide fodder for future psychiatrists to work with. Kids are pretty sophisticated nowadays. You'd probably have to use duck.. oooh, or rabbit! Sorry, couldn't resist. |

Don't have kids but why not make something in the shape of penguin food? A fish is a lot easier to fake than a flightless bird. I could turn a carrot into four or five fish in a few seconds. I could do the same with an apple and a handful of raisins or, better yet, dried cranberries. You might even go with real fish? Just (PLEASE) not the overpriced and not very healthful gold fish advertised on TV! Hope that helps |

Thanks for the great ideas. I have to go with Pink's Oreo Penguins. Although sweet, it is a fun project easy for preschoolers. So, Pink, go ahead and post it as an answer if you wish. |
