1. Buy a cheap Intel-based computer.  Heck, a Pentium-200 with 64 MB
of RAM will do it.

2. Install Linux.  Redhat or Fedora are pretty darn easy to install.

3. Setup some useful services...Samba for your home file server for
instance.  When you get stuck, google the problem.  Repeat till you
have a bunch of useful things going on (home control, firewall, file
server, print server, backup system, unattended cd ripping)

4. Patch your services to keep up with security holes!  Watch your logs for hacks.
