One of my old (it was harvest gold, to give you an idea of what vintage it was) 220V dryers finally died and I picked up a used newish dryer. The new dryer has a four-prong plug on it and my old receptacle is a 3-prong. I understand the rules changed in '96 and newer appliances require the fourth wire for grounding. The four connectors on the new dryer are red (hot), black (hot), white (neutral) and green (frame ground). Can I just connect the three-wire cord to this (middle is neutral/ground, I believe) and install a jumper from the frame screw to the white connector? Any suggestions on how to install a jumper (wire gauge, etc)? Should I just spring for an electrician to install the new style receptacle? I still have one other three-prong dryer in use and could plan for the future by upgrading the electrics now. To keep the money in the hand of the Researchers, I've priced this question low and will make the tip $8, rather than make it a ten dollar question. Larry and Sergey have made plenty already. | |

I have taken Siliconsamurai's recommendation and contacted an electrician for new 220's to be installed along with GFCI 110's. Until then, these instructions will let me tackle the rewire. Many thanks for the 5-star work! |

Spring for the electrician, it's too much risk if you don't already know that is just an extra real ground. |

Denco-- It is alive! Your research was good enough that I also figured out the four-wire I was taking out was installed incorrectly. Thanks again! --Mark |
