My computer at work, which has no internet connection, loses time - about a minute or so every hour. I have replaced the battery and still no luck. I'm running Windows 98 and have had no luck thus far . . any suggestions?? |

That sounds like the CMOS battery is dying. On the motherboard there is a small battery whose task is to keep time. When it starts to run out of power, those symptoms can occur. |

Linux has a utility which can be set up to automatically correct for clock drift, which is normally very consistent in a given machine. You have Win 98. I suppose one could google for a utility which will do the same thing for that OS, but have no idea if one exists. A minute an hour almost certainly involves a part which has failed. |

From what I can recall, on the older OSes (like Win'98), the OS would only read the BIOS clock once upon bootup. After that, it would rely upon the CPU to keep accurate time. Because the CPU clock's timer does not mathematically match up with a real clock or the BIOS clock, it would end up losing a few seconds each hour. Thus, there's no real solution unless you either upgrade to a more modern OS, or install some "catch-up" software that would instruct the OS to read the BIOS clock on a regular basis. Otherwise, reboot your computer once a day. Just my 2cents... |
