Question ID: 430290
My question is very simple?

Which graphics card is better?

A 128MB DDR ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300 graphics card, PCI Expressx16

or A 128MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 graphics card.

Dell have offered to replace my laptop and to put either an equal or
upgraded spec. into my new one. They have offered to put the X300 in
my new one instead of the 9700, is this a fair swap?

If they are good/bad in diffrent ways, why? And what do I gain/lose
from one in comparison to the other?

Many thanks in advance.

Simon.

Hello Simon,

I have included several reviews to help you decide which card to
select. You don;t say what you use your laptop for, but if you are
into graphic intensive gaming, go for the 9700. Actuallym there are
few perfomance differences, and some depend on other components of
your laptop, as to how well each card works.

Specifications

?"When selecting the right graphics processor to complement these
notebooks we needed a solution that easily powers the most intense
digital entertainment experiences," said Jonathan Kaye, manager of
product marketing, Personal Systems Group at HP. "MOBILITY RADEON X300
and MOBILITY RADEON X600 graphics processors from ATI help HP
notebooks stay on the leading edge of mobile technology by providing a
platform delivering the rich graphics and high-definition digital
video performance our most selective customers demand."
MOBILITY RADEON X300 and MOBILITY RADEON X600 drive a new standard for
video performance on notebook PCs. With innovative video processing
technologies such as VIDEO IMMERSIONTM II and FULLSTREAMTM, users
enjoy high-definition video quality combined with ultra-efficient
power consumption.?

?Designed for mainstream thin and light users, MOBILITY RADEON X300
offers a wide range of features including:
- Four pixel pipeline DirectX 9 performance
- POWERPLAY? 5.0 with new PCI Express based power management capabilities
- LRTC? and LCD-EE? for improved video quality on notebook panels
- Automatic Display Configuration technology for automated display setup
- HyperMemory? for increased system performance with smaller amounts of memory
- A range of integrated memory options for thin and light designs?

?Q. Some benchmarks list the Mobility Radeon X300 as being slower than
the GeForce Go 6200. What gives?

A.	The Mobility Radeon X300 provides comparable performance to the
GeForce Go 6200. The problem is that with HyperMemory and TurboCache
in the equation, each of these parts has a few variants making them
hard to properly compare. For the sake of argument, their performance
is comparable, but it's my understanding that the 128-bit 128MB
dedicated RAM on the X300s in Dells pushes them ahead of the 6200s,
which are contending with TurboCache.?

Features
http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9700/radeon9700pro/features.html

According to this website, the Radeo 9700 card is no longer being
made, perhaps making support and driver updates difficult. ?The ATI
Radeon 9700 series of cards are no longer in production and have been
replaced by the Radeon 9800 series cards?
http://www.infohq.com/Computer/ati-nvidia-graphics-cards.htm

?ATI?s new Mobility Radeon X700 is aimed directly at performance thin
notebooks. The Mobility Radeon X700 is geared for those people who
want high performance but still the ease of mobility a notebook can
provide. The Mobility Radeon X700 is a native PCI-Express graphics
chip for notebooks. The Mobility Radeon X700 is manufactured using
TSMC?s .11 micron process which reduces power consumption that is very
important for notebooks.?
http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NzQ2

?The chip that powers Mobility Radeon 9700 is the mobile equivalent of
Radeon 9600 XT's RV360, meaning it is still limited to 4 pipelines.?
http://www.beyond3d.com/reviews/ati/mr9700/

The Mobility x300 rated 958-1060 in this site?s benchmark testing.
The Mobility 9700 ranked 714-1430.
?Keep in mind that these 3D tests are the most basic video calls and
their performance can be a tiny factor in overall applications
performance. Speed also depends on many factors (such as the
manufacturer, lot number, stepping/revision, cooling efficiency,
compatibility etc.). After all, and other components in your system
should also be taken into account.?
http://freestone-group.com/video-card-stability-test/benchmark-results.html

?Despite our initial letdown, the Mobility Radeon 9700 is still worth
a look, as it's the first mobile GPU to take advantage of TSMC's low-k
dielectric process technology. The new process enables an 11% core
clock increase in this new GPU. But is this up-tick anything to get
all that excited about? Read on to find out.?

?Here's where the news gets better for the Mobility Radeon 9700: it's
running about neck-and-neck with its desktop cousin. We'll break down
the scores individually but, at a high level, this bodes very well for
the MR9700.?

?Our gripes about the name aside, however, the Mobility Radeon 9700
will be the mobile 3D GPU to beat in the coming months -- we'll be
curious to see if nVidia's GeForce FX 5700 Go is up to the task. When
we get our mitts on a laptop equipped with that mobile GPU, we'll put
it on the benchmark torture rack and see how it fares.?

?ATI starts the MOBILITY 9700 off with their M11 graphics core, which
is fundamentally quite similar to ATI?s RADEON 9600 XT on the desktop.
Image quality is the same from both chips because of this. However,
due to the stringent power and thermal requirements found in a laptop
system, core and memory clocks aren?t up to the same level as the
RADEON 9600 XT on the desktop. ATI has specified a clock frequency
range of 390MHz-450MHz on the M11 core. This is an improvement of at
least 40MHz on the MOBILITY 9600 PRO, as most notebook manufacturers
clock their MOBILITY 9600 PRO?s at 350MHz.

For memory, MOBILITY 9700 can be configured with up to 256MB of DDR
memory operating between 200-260MHz (400MHz-520MHz effective). Memory
clock frequency for MOBILITY 9700?s predecessor, MOBILITY 9600 PRO,
topped out at 200MHz.

Thanks to these increased clock frequencies, MOBILITY 9700 offers
improved performance in games, making it a better match for the
high-end displays used on most desktop replacement notebooks, which
run natively at higher screen resolutions. Also keep in mind that each
notebook manufacturer will determine the final clocks for their
specific mobile system depending on the market they?re targeting and
the power and thermal output they?re willing to live with inside their
system.?

It also depends on other laptop components as to how well each card
will perform. They seem rather comparable from my research. According
to a comment in the forum above, the x300 would not be the best for
gaming. From other sites I have included, you can see that the 9700 is
best for gaming. (By gaming, I mean graphics intensive games like Doom
and Half-Life, not Flash or Shockwave based games)

If you use your laptop for gaming, I?d go with the ATI Radeon Mobility
9700. If you use your laptop primarily for work applications,
internet, e-mail, etc., either card would work equally as well, with
the 9700 having a slight lead!

Please request an Answer Clarification if any part of my answer is
unclear. I will be happy to assist you further, before you rate this
answer.

Sincerely, Crabcakes
