Question ID: 430314
How can I disable progressive scan on my xbv343 dvd vcr? I chose a
"progressive scan" option even though I don't know anything about it
and now I can't get back into the menu options to disable it. When I
try to play a dvd, all I see is a blue screen with "Progressive Scan
Mode" on it. I tried unplugging it but it still shows up.

Howdy murphhhy-ga,

I will do this as clarification request in case you don't have the remote.
On the remote, push the Setup/Menu button. It is the small button to the
lower left side of the Select/Enter button.

The menu should appear on your TV screen, and you should then scroll down
using the down arrow that is just below the Select/Enter button. Scroll
to the menu entry marked Progressive Scan. Press the right arrow to move
to the entry for Progressive Scan and then press the up arrow to turn the
Progressive Scan off.

If the above does not work, then do the following.

Pointing the remote at the player, press the STOP key to stop any disc
that is playing. Next, press the STOP key again and hold it for five
seconds before releasing it. This should turn the Progressive Scan
off.

If this works for you, please respond, and I will post this as an answer.

Thanks! denco-ga - Google Answers Researcher

I have the remote. The second part of your answer fixed the problem.
By holding down the stop button, the progressive mode stopped.
THanks

Glad we could help you out, murphhhy-ga.

Here is what worked for you.

Pointing the remote at the player, press the STOP key to stop any disc
that is playing. Next, press the STOP key again and hold it for five
seconds before releasing it. This should turn the Progressive Scan off.

Search strategy:

Went to the Zenith product support web site and downloaded the owner's
manual.
http://www.zenithservice.com/

If you need the manual for future reference, go to the above web site.
Click on the "Owner's Manual" button. Type in the model number, which
is XBV343 in your case, and click on the Search button. The search will
result in the owner's manual in PDF format. It is somewhat large in size,
so it might take some time to download. A search on the word "progressive"
gives several results, including the method that worked.

If you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the PDF document referenced
above, you can download it at no cost from the Adobe website.

If you need any clarification, feel free to ask.

Returning to the Setup menu should give you the option to turn off
progressive scan.

"If you have a high-definition or 'digital ready' television you can
use the DVD/VCR?s progressive scan output. This will give you the
highest video resolution. If your TV doesn?t take the Progressive Scan
format your picture will look scrambled if you select the Progressive
Scan output. If you have the correct type television you hook up the
Component/Progressive scan video out jacks to the corresponding in
jacks on the TV. You then must set the Progressive Scan option to 'on'
through the Setup menu."

Thanks on how to reset Progressive Scan, I was about to toss a
perfectly good DVD/VCR player since it got stuck in "PROGRESSIVE SCAN

I too had this problem, but neither of the above solutions worked.
What did work is a variation of the second solution.

I continuously pressed down on the stop button about 40 times. The
progressive scan then went off.

I had this same problem. From what I can tell, denco-ga's solution
works but might be a little touchy. I'm not sure if the remote doesn't
give an accurate signal or what, but what brucecanny-ga suggested
worked. I repeatedly pressed the stop button and randomly held it down
(think "frustration") and this method worked within about 10 seconds.
Multiple attempts of just holding the stop button didn't work for me
despite that likely being the preferred method.

Thanks for the answers. I'm glad to have this fixed.
