Category: Italian Opera

My daughter is getting married. It is my responsibility, as her
father, to choose a song to which my daughter and I will dance.

I would prefer an Italian aria which expresses a father's love for his daughter.

The aria should be moving and beautiful. Please keep in mind that we
must be able to dance to the music.

Following the criteria mentioned above:
a. Create a list of six possible arias, if possible.
b. Cite two or three artists who have performed the aria.
c. Cite the recording/CD where the artist and aria can be heard

Sincerely,

Robert Spring

This may be quite difficult, in view of the fact that many arias in
which fathers express love for their daughters are quite downbeat, and
involve references to coercion, fear, death, and other unpleasant
matters that would, I think, render them unsuitable as wedding-related
songs.

There are many non-operatic Italian songs that might meet your needs.
Would you consider songs that are not arias from operas?

Pinkfreud-ga:

After I posted my question, I thought of the very thing which you
mention: downbeat and heavy scenarios.

Yes, Italian songs are a acceptable.

There's an interesting article here which describes several of Verdi's
father/daughter relationships and the arias associated with them:

"Lauretta" is a lovely Italian song for a father/daughter dance.

You can listen to a clip here:

"Waltz for Debby" isn't exactly an Italian song, but it is a wonderful
(and danceable) father/daughter song, and it's sung by a famous
Italian-American, Tony Bennett:
