UTILA

Utila is famous for divers encountering the Whale Shark migrating
through the waters of Utila in the months of March-April.
http://www.aboututila.com/

?Although more frequent in the months March-April and
August-September, the Whale Shark is regularly sighted around the
Island of Utila and unlike dolphins or other fish which tend to school
or travel in pods, are usually solitary. That said, it is not uncommon
for 5 or more singular Whale Sharks to be sighted in a single day
along the northern shores of Utila. The tropical island of Utila is
reckoned by some to be home to an annual rendezvous of these
presumably migratory creatures who have been recorded traveling over
8,000 miles.?
http://www.aboututila.com/ScubaInfo/Whale-Sharks/Whale-Shark-Utila.htm

ScubaBoard is an online scuba diving forum community where you can
join over 50,000 divers from around the world discussing all things
related to Scuba Diving

Scuba Board gives good references for Utila.

?I was in Utila the first week of april and was lucky enough to
snorkel with a whale shark (it was unforgettable!). From what I've
heard, Utila is a very good place to see whale sharks (we have seen
just one in a 9 day diving --you have to go dive on the north side to
see them) and your best chances are from february to may so the season
is ending soon.
I have dived with both deep blue divers (Louis is a great DM!) and
BICD and they were both very good.?

Review
Diving Utila with Deep Blue
Report Date: 20-Mar-2005

?I was interested in Utila and sent of several e-mails to places down
there and received a quick response from Deep Blue Resort which ended
up being the place that I stayed. I have to say that this was one of
the best trips that I have been on in the Caribbean. The resort is
fairly new and is in a beautiful setting on the beach?

?The highlight of the trip was the Whale Sharks. Each day we would do
our morning dive and then during our surface interval we would go
looking for Whale Sharks. On Monday we hit the jack pot. We sighted
several sharks and had the opportunity to swim with a couple. One of
them so close that we could have reached out and touched it, of course
touching is not allowed and all of our group were very respectful of
that. What an amazing experience to swim with these gentle giants.??

?Although Deep Blue is a higher end resort especially compared to most
of the accommodations on the island, their pricing structure is very
reasonable for what you get, the personal service and quality of
diving is worth every penny.?

Please check out Coco Plum Island Resort (private island)

WHALE SHARK DIVES

"During full moons in the months of March-June, you can dive in the
Silk Cay Marine Reserve to view whale sharks. During these full moons,
dog snapper come to this area of the reef to spawn. Whale sharks
follow to feed upon the spawn. The docile, gentle whale shark is the
largest of all fish and can weigh up to 15 tons and be up to 45 feet
in length. As many as four to five whale sharks can be seen on a dive
and this experience should not be missed by divers visiting Belize
during these full moons. These dives will require special arrangements
and additional costs."

Does it have to be the western Caribean?
March-April is actually the best time to see whale sharks while scuba
diving in Thailand.

The number one location is off the island of Koh Tao at a dive site
called Chumpon Pinnacle. I have dived with 3 whale sharks at the same
time with this dive shop http://www.kohtaoeasydivers.com and they were
really knowledgeable about these beautiful creatures. See their web
site for more information if you are interested.
