Hi Archerjohn!
I doubt the dancers were nude. The performances take place outside
on the river, with the distinctive limestone (?) mountains as the
backdrop. Actually, the performance takes place at the intersection of
two rivers, one of which is used as a 'backstage' for the boats used
in the performance. When I saw saw "Impressions" last Chinese New
Years in Yangshuo, the temperature was close to freezing, if not below
freezing! The 'dancers' were on the boats, so they would have been
getting the cold temperature plus the wind chill!
Another thing that makes me doubt they were nude is they wore some
sort of electrical lights (think: white Christmas tree lights), so
they had to have place to hook their batteries.
It was a marvelous experience, with refreshing use of staging and
lighting. I only wish I'd been able to get a video/DVD recording of
it. Think of syncronized boating (like synchronized swimming), meets
Las Vegas showgirls meets Broadway musical and you've got a good sense
of it!
If you're going to see it, be sure to get there EARLY. There were
huge traffic jams caused by all the tour buses bringing people there.
It also seems to be a popular event for VIPS,too - the security people
there prevented us from entering the venue because some VIPS were to
attend. By the time the VIPS arrived, it was almost show time. There
were crowd control barriers (similar to the type used at amusement
parks to keep people in line while they wait their turn on the ride),
and with the surge of people trying to get it, it's a wonder my hip
wasn't shattered by the force from the crowd pushing and shoving
behind me. Also, it's about a five to seven minute walk to get to the
seating area. So, even though we got there well in advance of the
performance time, we were delayed by the VIPS! Very impressive show.
Excellent source of employment for people living around there! |
