I own a 2000 Toyota Sienna minivan. My son is in a booster seat and
my daughter a convertible seat, both sitting in the first bench seat
directly behind the driver/passenger seats, and both facing forward
and obviously seat-belted. This Sienna bench seat reclines back quite
a bit, as do both the booster and convertible seats. While driving,
the children often fall asleep and we like to recline the bench seat
back (with the backs of the booster and convertible seats reclining as
well) for more comfortable sleeping. IS THIS CONSIDERED SAFE TO DO?

Hiwdy smyers-ga,

The Car-Safety.org website's Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page states the
following.
http://www.car-safety.org/faq.html

"Front-facing carseats should not be reclined. Though some front-facing and
convertible models are approved in a semi-reclined position, this recline does
concentrate crash forces in the crotch so an upright position is preferred."

Would the above do as an answer for your question? Thanks!

Hi ~
Thanks for the info. so far, but here's the clarification asked for: I
own a Combi Avatar Convertible Car Seat and a Jupiter Komfort Kruiser
Booster Seat. Both are made to recline with children in them, but my
question is this - if my Sienna bench seat is reclined let's say 45
degrees, can both these seats (facing forward) also be reclined back
45 degrees while driving? Your previous answer stated "..Front-facing
carseats should not be reclined.." but then went on to say "..Though
some front-facing and convertible models are approved in a
semi-reclined positions..." With these car seat models, in this
minivan, at this 45 degree angle, is it safe while driving?

Thank again. SMyers

Howdy smyers-ga,

Although I have not found anything within the documentation for either
the Combi Avatar car seat or the Jupiter Komfort Kruiser booster seat
that states it would be unsafe for the child to ride in a forward facing
reclined position, from examination of images of both seats, I think that
using the Combi Avatar in that manner could possibly increase the type of
injuries as outlined on the Car-Safety.org website's Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ) page.

The Jupiter Komfort Kruiser booster seat does not appear that it would
provide anything to prevent the child from sliding forward, and even
though it might be a twisting motion, which is probably not good in
itself, the child could slide right out of the seat. In "best" case
it would appear to increase the potential of the child getting caught up
in the safety belt.

Bottom line is that I would not place my 4 year old in that position.
