Outlook 2002 will only support a .pst / .ost filesize of 2GB. If you
are using outlook in conjunction with exchange server, the problem
will manifest itself by not allowing any new email messages to be
retrieved from the exchange server and will "hang" until it times out
while attempting to talk with the mail server.
To fix this you will need to compact your folders (which compacts
their corresponding .pst files).
It is a little known fact that Outlook does not delete files when you
empty your Deleted Items folder, rather, it only tags them as deleted.
To recover the disk space and reduce the size of the pst file, you
must trigger the "Compact Now" outlook feature. To find this elusive
feature, right-click your mouse on any of your personal folder icons
in your outlook folder list, select "Properties" and look for the
"compact now" option (it is under the "Advanced" button under the
"General" tab in the folder "Properties" in Outlook 2000).
If your pst file has less than 16KB free space, the "Compact Now"
feature may not function. In this situation, you would first reduce
the size of your folder by triggering the archive function under the
file menu to create a new pst file containing some sub-folders from
the folder whose size you are attempting to reduce. You would then run
"Compact Now" for each of those folders to reduce the size of their
corresponding pst files.
