Question ID: 431027
I need advice on how to hike sales of self-published repair manual:
The Jeep Bible. Interested ga-ers will need to go to my weebsite
www.jeepbible.com and familiarize themselves with the book, now in its
third (expanded) edition.
Then, go to Google and search on the Jeep Bible. Note that most
entries show an illustration of the cover of the SECOND edition. One
of the reasons for this appears to be that Amazon.com still displays
a picture of the second edition and the websites link back to Amazon
for the illustration (???). Many with 2nd ed cover pics have copy that
relates to the third edition.
I have tried to get Amazon to list the third edition ? which has a
different (modified) cover and ISBN number. I am 77 and not too
computer savvy, but my son,who is into computers tried and wasn't able
to. Other URLs just don't know there is a third edition.
(Amazon screwed me once before already on this kind of thing in 1998. I had
published a "scholarly " book (I thought) titled The Winning of
Barbara Worth. It had the full text of author Harold Bell Wright's
1911 novel, plus several chapters of research my wife and I had done,
plus a biography, etc. I also designed an art deco dustjacket. Amazon
USED MY COVER to link to every used bookstore in its stable,
providing them with my art to illustrate the sale of every old copy of
the novel, plus a new one the (book text only) Pelican paperback. )
The successful answer must inclued:
1) Explicit, step by step, septuagenarian-friendly instructions on how
to get cover picture and entry changed on Amazon.
2) Instructions on how to cost-effectively get all of the
non-Amazon-referenced URLs to update their entries.
3) Any other advice on hiking sales. Anybody know if Trafficzilla helps?
4) A bonus will be paid the ga-er who helps me gain sales.

Only 77?

I'm 79 and I've written some stuff and I will now collect my thoughts.

However, I don't want to queer the pitch of the true professionals so
I will wait and see if any Researcher answers this first.

Hi Willie

(I assume that you are Willie)

First, let me say that it's nice to have a younger guy showing an
interest in GA and Amazon and all that stuff.

I've had a look at your site and UGGHHH it's awful!

(Sorry about that)

I've also had a look at the Amazon stuff and it looks to me as though
your arch rival is picking up most of the biz (coming in at 91,974 in
the Amazon Sales Ranking which ain't bad) but let's face it $29.99 is
VERY steep for your paperback, particularly as you do not have the
Cover Image, the same number of Reviews, etc., etc.

To justify a higher price than the market leader you need to
demonstrate some real (or perceived) benefits. If there are any, they
have escaped me.

I hardly think that Amazon have ever 'screwed you'. They are 'only' a
bookshop and it's up to the authors and publishers to get their
promotional stuff up to speed.

What I suggest is that you start by listing your book on ebay.

Maybe run two campaigns: one as an auction starting at (say) $4.99 -
to test the market. The other with a 'Buy Now' Price of (say) $9.99.

I don't know what your production cost is ... Have you got hundreds of
books in stock or are you using Print on Demand? But whichever ebay
will give you a perception of the level of user interest, if any. OK
so you may lose out but if YOU can't stimulate the market on ebay then
at least you have gained some useful intelligence.

It's a very competitive world out there but you can grab yourself a
stake if you are really serious.

All the Best

Regarding Trafficzilla:

I've no experience but it's inexpensive and might be worth a month's trial.

However, first arrange to offer PayPal facilities on your site and
tidy up the ordering procedures.

A further thought.

Trafficzilla might bring in a lot of traffic but will it be junk traffic?

(It's better to have 1 hit that converts into an order than 1,000 that don't.)

You might be better trying Google Ads and/or Google-Print.

I assume that you have accesss to statistics on your Web traffic?

All the Best

Mike
