Dear ramjet51-ga;
Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. In
order for a property to be officially listed as a ?historic place? one
must obtain recognition from a state preservation organization and
ultimately be nominated to National Register of Historic Places. Be
prepared to exercise a great deal of patience because the process is
often long and sometimes arduous and it is not uncommon for property
owners to try for years to get a place nominated (if it is ever
successfully nominated at all).

The State Historic Preservation Officer of the State or other such
organization, like the Preservation League of New York State for
example, usually nominates properties to the National Register. The
New York Preservation officer is Mrs. Bernadette Castro.

The Preservation League of New York State is accepting submissions for
nominations this year through February 10, 2006. Nominations are then
evaluated by the Awards Committee, which is appointed by the Chairman
of the Board of Trustees of the Preservation League. All nominators
will be notified in writing in April. The awards will be presented in
mid-May at the Preservation League?s Annual Meeting in New York City.

There are other historical societies in New York that can also assist
a person with the nominations. Depending on the type of property you
have and where it is located, one or more of these societies may be
able to help you understand the process better.
