Does smoking cigarettes help in being able to go to the bathroom? My
wife needs to smoke a cigarrete every morning, she claims that without
the cigarette she will not be able to and the constipation can last
for days. She has a acne problem, I believe that her bowels not
working correctly combines with her acne is a seriose problem because
it is her body not eliminating. She argues that it's only one
cigareete per day and that it can't be that harmful. What can one
cigarette per day do? I have looked on the web to try to find what a
smokers lung looks like so the visual of this might persuade her to
stop. Thanks

Dear kize7311-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. It is
true that in some people nicotine does in fact stimulate bowl
movements. It is a known fact that nicotine affects the bowel in the
same manner as caffeine, which is why people that have irritable bowel
syndrome and Crohn's Disease are encouraged to stop smoking. Nicotine
also indirectly causes caffeine to metabolize (to be depleted) at a
rate twice that of non-smokers so people who drink caffeinated drinks
often drink more, or stronger drinks, than non-smokers in order to get
the same affect. Therefore people who drink things like coffee and
colas ?and? smoke may experience an even greater sense of urgency that
those who do not, simply because they consume more stimulants. Even if
the person does not drink caffeinated drinks as a rule, smoking is, by
itself, a bowel stimulant.

As for the association between acne and bowel movements, there has
long been a position, primarily among the natural health conscious,
that there is a direct connection. However, there are also some
alternatives that are much better for you than smoking:

?A strategy for dealing with acne begins with effective "bowel
cleansing" and healthy bowel flora (the normal lacto-bacteria that
live in our intestines). This has always been considered the
cornerstone of every natural acne treatment. The best remedy for this
is for your teenager to eat about 1/4-1/2 cup of fresh, unpasteurized
traditionally made sauerkraut every day and then take one teaspoon of
Swedish Bitters in warm water before bed. You can make the sauerkraut
yourself following the recipes in Nourishing Traditions. There is also
a brand called Bubbies, found in the refrigerator section of a good
health food store. There are also scores of other lacto-fermented
vegetables, fruits and drinks described in Nourishing Traditions that
you can try. Sauerkraut, however, should be the cornerstone of
treatment as the high sulphur content of the cabbage is especially
valuable in skin cleansing. (Cabbage juice is valued in Irish folk
medicine for giving a beautiful complexion.)

Another area of importance is the inclusion of the proper fats in the
diet (such as good quality butter and olive oil) and excluding the
commercial vegetable oils and hydrogenated margarines and shortenings.
Your teenager should also take 1/2 teaspoon or 3 capsules cod liver
oil daily and 4-5 capsules of evening primrose daily as supplements.

Raw foods should be included liberally in the diet, including
vegetables, fruits, milk and even meat. At the same time he should
decline sodas, sugar and junk foods as much as possible. Make his own
lunch so that he does not have to eat in the cafeteria, and always
have plenty of nutritious natural snacks on hand.?

Where your worries about smoking one cigarette per day, let me show
you some published facts that only one cigarette a day is clearly
harmful, and more so it now seems than experts previously thought.

?Smoking even one cigarette a day trebles (triples) the risk of heart
disease or lung cancer - and the effect is greater in women.?

?Just one cigarette a day can triple your risk of developing heart

the more severe consequences of smoking, reports Asian News

?In both sexes, smoking one to four cigarettes per day was associated
with a significantly higher risk of dying from ischaemic heart disease
and from all causes, and from lung cancer in women?

Here is a GRAPHIC color image of a healthy lung vs. a smoker?s lung.
You will note the collection of tar, nicotine and other chemicals in
the lungs that accumulate in the lung and do not evacuate completely
upon exhale.
